9 Best Vanilla Colognes and Perfumes For Men in 2024

Are you looking for a cologne that’s more Casanova than caveman? Then opt for a scent that’s sweet, sophisticated, and seductive. Vanilla can transform hefty rum, coffee, tobacco, leather, and wood notes to create a mood-enhancing love potion.

The scent of vanilla is instantly recognizable and lives up to its reputation as a libido booster. Its flavor and scent, many believe, increase lust. If you’re skeptical, don’t be.

According to plant experts, Bristol botanicals, “from the time of the Aztecs, vanilla was considered an aphrodisiac. This reputation was much enhanced in 1762 when a German study found that a medication based on vanilla extract cured impotence – all 342 smiling subjects claimed they were cured.”

When I first started using cologne, I swerved the sweeter scents. But over the years and after many blind buys, I’ve discovered the key to success. Choosing the best vanilla cologne all comes down to finding a delicate balance of notes.

These 9 best vanilla colognes and perfumes for men lead the charge. From spicy and smoky to musky and woody and everything in between. Here are my favorite best vanilla colognes for men!

    Coach Platinum

Were you expecting to see Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille in the top spot? Tobacco Vanille is a cult classic. Yet the world of vanilla perfume has come a long way since 2007, when TF paved the way with his ground-breaking vanilla offering.

Now, when choosing the best men’s vanilla cologne, the only limit is your imagination. Testament to this is Coach Platinum.

Warm and sensual, Coach Platinum takes its inspiration from the spirit of the open road. The fragrance is a call to arms for daring guys wanting to escape the humdrum of city life.

The beauty of vanilla perfume is its ability to fuse with other ingredients. And here, this blend of spices and fruit notes with subtle vanilla is ideal for warmer months, day or night. From its initial opening of juicy pineapple to its grownup dry-down of heady patchouli and exotic sandalwood, it’s a worthy cologne contender.

The dominant chords of sandalwood and sage are beautifully accentuated, while the vanilla, rather than taking center stage, subtly enhances the composition, providing just the right touch of sweetness.

Top Notes: Pineapple, black pepper, juniper berries | Middle Notes: Cashmeran, sage, geranium | Base notes: Vanilla, leather, sandalwood, patchouli| Size: 2oz | Type: Eau de Parfum | Season: Spring, summer

    Maison Margiela Jazz Club

Rich and evocative, Maison Margiela’s Jazz Club is reminiscent of dimly lit lounges and the soft strumming of a double bass. It’s a fragrance for the bold, for those who yearn for an escape from the ordinary and dive into a world of sophistication.

Jazz Club has the spicy warmth of a premium rum and the elegant smokiness of a fine cigar. Mating these elements together is boozy and sensual raw vanilla bean. This cologne is an intoxicating scent for winter.

Although a deep scent, the EDT formula prevents Jazz Club from becoming heavy or overpowering. The projection is moderate, and longevity is a respectable 3-6 hours, more than enough for a wild night on the tiles.

Top Notes: Pink pepper, neroli, lemon | Middle Notes: Rum, vetiver, clary sage | Base notes: Tobacco, vanilla bean, styrax | Size: 3.4oz | Type: Eau de Toilette | Season: Fall, winter

    Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme

Looking for a killer cologne that has a boozy buzz without the raging hangover? Many of the best vanilla colognes feature liquor-inspired notes. Of all the amber-colored tipples, none complements vanilla quite as well as bourbon.

Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme is as explosive as its hand grenade-shaped flacon. A peppery citrus opening blends down to a spicy heart before settling into a hot and heady bourbon-vanilla base. Tart, empowering, and rich, Spicebomb Extreme brings the heat as temperatures drop; this is 100 per cent a nighttime scent.

Spicebomb Extreme’s performance power is a hot debate. Some wearers experience beast mode longevity and projection. Meanwhile, others find it more of a skin scent. I’m in the former camp and can still smell this on myself the morning after a night out. I suggest spritzing a sample to test how it meshes with your body chemistry.

Top Notes: Grapefruit, pimento berries, black pepper | Middle Notes: Cumin, cinnamon, saffron | Base notes: Tobacco, vanilla, bourbon, amber| Size: 3.4oz | Type: Eau de Parfum | Season: Fall, winter

    Valentino Uomo Intense

Unleash your inner Italian stallion with Valentino Uomo Intense. Although launched in 2014, I didn’t welcome Uomo Intense into my cologne arsenal until last year. Now, it is the best vanilla cologne in my collection and one of my all-time favorite fragrances.

Valentino Uomo is the best vanilla cologne for men who take pleasure in smashing stereotypes. Suave and sophisticated, the notes offer a delicious contradiction. Intense black leather and tonka bean are brightened with mandarin and florals and warmed with fresh vanilla. The result is a soft yet masculine Valentino fragrance that shows vanilla perfume needn’t always be sweet to succeed.

The notes sit better on the skin than on clothes; body warmth helps the base develop and intensify. In terms of staying power, I get a solid 8-10+ hours of wear from 5-6 body spritzes.

Top Notes: Mandarin, clary sage | Middle Notes: Iris, tonka bean | Base notes: Vanilla, leather| Size: 3.4oz | Type: Eau de Parfum | Season: Fall, winter

    Chanel Allure Homme Sport

A study by Showers to You revealed 78% of a group of 3,700 women voted aromatic fragrances the most attractive scents for guys. Chanel Allure Homme Sport offers an aromatic, musky twist on a classic vanilla cologne so you can enjoy the best of both worlds.

The top notes are an instant pick-me-up. Sparkling orange and mandarin, backed by salty seawater and aldehydes, are sunshine in a bottle. A peppery, woody heart transitions to a substantial base. Here, vanilla and white musk mingle with amber, vetiver, and tonka bean.

This fragrance is the best vanilla cologne when you want to seem cool, calm and shower fresh. The white musk is predominant enough that this vanilla perfume doubles as one of my favorite musk fragrances.

Chanel Allure Homme Sport is the best vanilla cologne for spring, not to mention a cool summer scent. Pair Allure Homme Sport with a crisp polo shirt and fresh kicks, and you’re on the right track.

Top Notes: Orange, sea notes, aldehydes, blood mandarin | Middle Notes: Pepper, neroli, cedar | Base notes: Tonka bean, vanilla, white musk, amber, vetiver| Size: 5oz | Type: Eau de Toilette | Season: Spring, summer

    Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille

No best vanilla cologne roundup would be complete without this legendary luxury scent. Some colognes lose their magic when they reach cult status, but Tom Ford Tobacco Vanilla stands the test of time. Like the vampire of the fragrance world, it simply doesn’t age.

I’m not embarrassed to say that I wasn’t always a cologne connoisseur. For a long time, my go-to fragrance was whatever was on discount. Something to splash on before heading out rather than to savor and enjoy.

That was until my partner gifted me my first bottle of Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. For 12 hours, I was enveloped in an intoxicating cloud of smooth, smoky vanilla and bitter chocolate. I found myself standing taller, walking with more confidence, and damn I felt sexy.

My luxury scent library has come a long way since then, but even still, Tobacco Vanille remains my go-to for special occasions and romantic rendezvous. Thanks to its premium price tag, this best vanilla tobacco cologne remains exclusive despite its worldwide popularity.

Top Notes: Tobacco leaf, spicy notes | Middle Notes: Vanilla, cacao, tonka bean, tobacco blossom | Base notes: Dried fruits, woody notes| Size: 1.7oz | Type: Eau de Toilette | Season: Fall, winter

    The Body Shop Vanilla Mist

Want a raw vanilla cologne minus the fuss and frills? The Body Shop Vanilla Mist is pure and simple vanilla. Clean and inviting; no spices, woods, aromatics, or citrus to water down your favorite note.

This scented mist is the best vanilla cologne for the conscious consumer. With 96% natural ingredients and a 31% recycled glass bottle, this cruelty-free, vegan cologne leaves your skin sweet and your conscience clean.

A mist naturally doesn’t have the same staying power as an EDT or EDP, so you’ll need to reapply it more frequently. No worries, though, since The Body Shop Vanilla Mist is wallet-friendly. At around $15 per 3.3oz bottle, it’s the ultimate budget-friendly fragrance for men not looking to splurge on a new scent.

As with all Body Shop scents, the Vanilla Mist is unisex but does lean on the sweeter side, so it’s a scent for young guys.

Notes: Vanilla | Size: 3.3oz | Type: Eau de Toilette | Season: Spring, summer, fall

    Maison Margiela Coffee Break

Can’t survive the day without multiple cups of Joe? Join the club. For me, it’s not just the energy boost I get from a steaming cup of coffee but the creamy, cozy, mood-boosting smell.

Now, imagine you get to carry that scent with you all day without suffering a caffeine overdose. Let me introduce you to Maison Margiela Coffee Break.

Don’t worry; coffee and vanilla are not all this unisex cologne have to offer. There are enough refined notes in the blend that you won’t be left smelling like your girlfriend’s candle. Pepper, orange blossom, patchouli, tonka bean, cedar, and vetiver, to name a few.

Gourmand, creamy, spicy, and woody with a hint of florals, Coffee Break, is casual, relaxed, and inviting. It’s the perfect fragrance for fall and the best vanilla cologne for weekends spent kicking back with your favorite people.

Top Notes: Pepper, orange blossom, patchouli | Middle Notes: Lavender, coffee, milk, tonka bean, cypriol oil | Base notes: Vanilla, cedar, vetiver| Size: 3.4oz | Type: Eau de Toilette | Season: Fall, winter

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood

If you want your cologne to go the distance, you need one that combines the sweet scent with other powerhouse notes. No note is more enduring than Middle-Eastern oud.

Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood is mysterious, luxurious, and demands attention. Visit Dubai or Abu Dhabi, and if you hang around enough high-end haunts, I guarantee you’ll smell this scent on the city’s elite.

Oud Satin Mood is in my top three all-time longest-lasting colognes, and I’m not alone. A staggering 82% of Fragrantica users who reviewed Oud Satin Mood experienced 7-12+ hours of wear.

With Bulgarian and Turkish rose, violet, vanilla, and oud, this scent isn’t for the faint-hearted. This fragrance is unisex, which explains some of the more traditionally feminine notes. Yet it’s ideal for confident alpha males who refuse to go unnoticed.

Top Notes: Bulgarian rose, Turkish rose | Middle Notes: Violet, vanilla | Base notes: Oud, benzoin | Size:  2.4oz  | Type: Eau de Parfum | Season: Winter

What to look for in the Best Vanilla Cologne

    Price:

Vanilla is one of the most expensive ingredients in the world. Lucky for you and your wallet, though, not all the best vanilla colognes carry an eyewatering price tag. From cheap and cheerful The Body Shop Vanilla Mist to reasonably-priced Viktor & Rolf Spicebomb Extreme, there’s a vanilla perfume for most budgets.

On the flip side, if fragrance is your guilty pleasure, splash the cash on Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood or cult-cologne Tom Ford Tobacco Vanille. Having put my money where my mouth is, these best vanilla colognes are worth the splurge.

    Is it long-lasting?

One of the biggest hitters in the long-lasting league is Maison Francis Kurkdjian Oud Satin Mood. Following hot on its heels is Tom Ford’s Tobacco Vanille. What both of these fragrances share are their warm and spicy notes. These last the longest, and their oils evaporate more slowly than colognes with a floral or fruit base. So it’s good to consider when choosing a long-lasting vanilla perfume.

Like to switch your scent up at night and don’t want your daytime fragrance lingering behind? Opt for something subtle and lightweight, like The Body Shop Vanilla Mist.

    Is it seasonal?

I used to think sweet and spicy gourmand fragrances were all about fall and winter. But blend them with the right notes, and some vanilla perfumes smell just as good in the warmer months. A stellar scent for summer is fruity Coach Platinum or clean and fresh Chanel Allure Homme Sport. Their blend of lighter top notes makes them warm-weather-ready.

When fall and winter roll around, it’s time to switch up your scent to something that can withstand the cold. So reach for my head-turning go-to’s; Maison Margiela Coffee Break and Valentino Uomo Intense.

15 Best Vintage T-Shirts For Men: Retro Tees, Old School Style 2024

The t-shirt (first manufactured in 1898) has been the bedrock of modern man’s look. But in the age of digitalization, where nostalgia, street style, and fast access reign supreme, men’s vintage t-shirts have become highly prized. The best vintage tees are snapped up by the savvy. But you don’t have to visit every vintage store within a hundred-mile radius or surf through masses of vintage t-shirts online to get a slice of the vintage pie (ew). You just have to acquaint yourself with the ins and outs of shopping vintage, or read our choice *kisses thumb and forefinger together* selections in this article.

First things first. Visit your local vintage store to find the best vintage t-shirts. Keep the community thriving and get to know the people; the real world is always better than the digital.

There are literally hundreds of online retailers. But just like the clothes rail sitting on the computer, scrolling through endless pictures of t-shirts can get exhausting (trust me, I do it for a living).

So how about we ease the burden a little, hey? Why don’t you put your feet up and let us point out the best vintage t-shirts in the most salient categories? That way, you’ll emerge with vintage tees without so much as a pleasant read and a few quick clicks to victory. Read on, my friendly vintage friends, read on.

    RHUDE Dimora cotton T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: XS-XL |

Rhuigi Villaseñor has brought about a unique marriage of streetwear and luxury to the fashion industry. This is obvious in the ingenious logo design at play. It has an eighties edge that drips with panache, like the logo of an eighties metal band or an Italian sportscar.

Of course, it is none of those things. This antique hotel sign design tee comes with drop shoulders and a square-like fit which references the current style. Style this with loose denim jeans, ice-cold shades, and Converse.

    Corridor NYC Striped Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Organic Cotton | Colors available: Multi  | Sizes Available: XS-XXL

Corridor NYC is a miniature factory of stylish things. This is one of their 70s-inspired vintage tees, which bubbles up visions of large hair and flares but in a clipped and restrained way.

Pair with mid-wash loose jeans, or if you’re feeling groovy, some green or brown corduroy trousers. This piece is also recommended due to its using organic cotton. Good for the planet. Good for your wardrobe.

    Vans Motorhead Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: XS-XXL |

Lemmy with the legendary ‘tash. He was the lead singer of UK hard rock band Motörhead (got a lot of time for the use of the German umlaut), formed in 1975. Known for their classic “Ace of Spades” tune, there’s a little spades emblem at the back of the t-shirt, in homage to that rock ‘n roll classic.

The front graphic depicts a part-wolf, part-bear creature called “snaggletooth,” which was the band’s logo of choice. With Lemmy’s vintage tees, you can embody the evil snare of the snaggletooth. Terrifying.

    Rolling Stones Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Ring Spun Cotton | Colors available: White | Sizes Available: S-XXXL |

Not so much vintage as the modern and official fashion brand arm of a rock band with some of the world’s most recognizable graphics ever designed. The Rolling Stones, ever heard of them? These loonies legends have been around since the 60s and are still going to this day.

That makes the best vintage t-shirt remasters somewhat analogous to the cultural position of the band itself. They are both vintage and contemporary at the same time. Clever, huh?

    Tupac Long sleeve Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: White, Black | Sizes Available: XS-XL |

You must, I repeat, must have a vintage Tupac Shakur t-shirt in your closet. The man is endlessly mythologized because of his suspicious early demise around the Notorious B. I. G. rivalry and saga; his lyrics ooze with talent and literary craft; his songs are powerful and emotive.

That’s why his face and presence make for one of the best vintage t-shirts. Coming to think of it, the black long-sleeved t-shirt version is the only way you should have a Tupac tee.

To style this, we’re turning to our old friend—the loose-fit jeans. Also, try it with a large parka jacket to be street-style winter-ready. Long live Makaveli. Long live his vintage tees.

    Johnny Cash Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: White | Sizes Available: S-XXL |

Johnny Cash was an imperious figure in the country scene from the 50s, maintaining it right up to his death in 2003. The “Ring of Fire” is a fantastic tune, as is the re-write of Nine Inch Nail’s track, “Hurt.”

He also has one of the coolest names to put on the front of men’s vintage t-shirts. Call me a music critic, but his success and his cool name can’t just be a coincidence. That is how you sell records, people. If he was around in this day and age, he could have called himself Johnny Ca$h and pivoted to rap. Oh well. Wear a bit of country music heritage on your chest with this classic tee.

    champion Bookstore Logo Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Cream, Black | Sizes Available: XS-XXL

Champion has the best vintage t-shirts in the collegiate/varsity style. Don’t believe us? Just have a quick run through their “back to uni” roster. No, this doesn’t shout out, “I WENT TO [Insert College], RESPECT ME AND MAKE ME RICH” from its chest like other collegiate tees.

But it is cooler, respectful, and more peaceful. Like the recently retired tennis player Federer, a real champion does play the sport with vigor and grace but is graceful in defeat too. I do wonder what that’s like…

Pair this with dark indigo jeans. But, hey, let’s say you’re just chillin’ with the boiz? Well then, black, white, or gray trackies are all excellent choices, sir.

    Pizza Planet Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: White | Sizes Available: S-XXL |

Did you, like me, saw this t-shirt and thought: “yeaasss!” remembering Toy Story? Then you, like me, are the chosen demographic for this graphic. While the imagery of Pizza Planet is still etched into my five-year-old brain, after some frantic Googling, I rediscovered this is where they encounter the evil teenager, Sid, who picks them out of the arcade with a claw. It’s at this point it gets perilous for Buzz and Woody. Damn, I should probably watch this bonafide classic again.

By referencing an iconic location in an iconic film, the t-shirt becomes more layered than just a regular Toy Story t-shirt. It becomes cooler, in a geeky way, of course. If this doesn’t tickle your graphic tee pickle, I’m not sure what will.

    Atari Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: S-XXL |

There are few things more eighties other than Atari. There are also few logos or works of graphic design that are as iconically eighties as the Atari logo. It’s just three simple lines. That’s all it is.

And yet, everyone who has forgotten Atari knows the logo. That is how transcendent and powerful the graphic is. This is precisely why wearing this vintage logo in black and white contrast on the chest of your shirt makes it one of the best vintage t-shirts. You are evoking the eighties, the birth of gaming and timeless design.

Gucci x Adidas Jersey Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Polyester Blend | Colors available: Red, Green | Sizes Available: XS-XXXL |

If there has been one brand that harnessed nostalgia or the power of vintage and funneled these emotions so perfectly through a modern lens, it’s Gucci. Vintage Adidas is a whole other gem in and of itself, so when these two brand powerhouses combine, it becomes a multi-layered cheesecake of fashion delight.

The saturated red of this t-shirt doesn’t care for no one. No. Neither do the sharp contrast Adidas three-stripes and the Gucci green and red arm hems. This is an example of the best vintage t-shirts at their most refined.

    Smiley Oversized Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: S, M |

The smiley is a symbol of the 90s Acid House raves. It was emblazoned on the little pills of ecstasy that created the headspace of eternal love and endless dancing. Is the sideways smile on this Readymade t-shirt a warning that taking too much can have disturbing results? Hm.

This oversized, boxy t-shirt draws good vibes through its minimalist design and is a subtle nod to the hard, fast, and loving 90s. Here’s to all of that.

    Umbro Off-White Vintage T-shirt

Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Off-White, Navy, Khaki | Sizes Available: S-XL

One of the most endlessly rewarding sub-genres of the best vintage t-shirts is… vintage sports t-shirts. Sports clothing back in the day was simple, strong, and evocative. This polo tee follows suit perfectly.

Nigel Cabourn is a British fashion designer known for his rugged outerwear and vintage-shop sportswear themes. And who better to team up with for a sports kit than the vintage-saturated brand Umbro?

90s Umbro was the absolute *flame emoji* of football kits. Although, the whole of the 90s and early 00s was quite a special time for that. Anyway, reveling in the nostalgia is what this zip-up polo t-shirt does best, but it does so with a lot more class and taste.

    Led Zeppelin Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: S-XL |

Honor the gods of rock n roll (can you tell I’m a fan?) with this stylish black t-shirt by Urban Outfitters. The “Over Europe 1980” tour was hugely significant for the band because it was their last ever. They played at nine venues in West Germany, plus Brussels, Rotterdam, Zurich, and Vienna.

The tour hadn’t gone entirely smooth. One night Jimmy Page (lead guitarist) was struck in the face with a firecracker. Another night, Jon Bonham (drummer) collapsed onstage and was rushed to hospital. But the punk movement revitalized the band and was excited to get going again when tragically, Bonham died during rehearsals for their US leg.

Style-wise, this is one of the best vintage t-shirts going, and it’s also a small but humble testament to all that once was.

    Polo Ralphp Lauren Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Black | Sizes Available: S-XL |

The Urban Outfitter’s Urban Renewal program is dedicated to providing top-quality vintage tees. They put in the time and effort to secure a steady supply of the best vintage t-shirts around the world. That’s why you pay a premium for it. This very simple black Polo Ralph Lauren t-shirt with a nice red logo will pack a punch when worn oversized. It was born to be draped off the shoulders nonchalantly.

You might like this oversized tee so much that all you want in your wardrobe now are oversized tees.

    Triump x Lola Vintage T-shirt

    Material: 100% Cotton | Colors available: Bone | Sizes Available: XS-XL |

One style of vintage motorcycle tee out there features great big Harleys, scantily clad ladies, and men with bushy beards. Then there’s the other, tattier kind that has a picture of a motorbike and a guy, captioned by things like “Sure, I talk to myself. I’m the smartest person I know.”

We’re not here for either of them. We’re here for the tasteful and perfect aesthetic harmony of Triumph and Lola Blackheart. Blackheart’s work references pin-up and the vintage styles of the early 20th century, all done in a tattoo-ink style. Lola and Triumph have created a contemporary men’s vintage t-shirt with artistic integrity.

What To Look For When Searching For The Best Vintage T-Shirts For Men

    Material

The material will generally be polyester or 100% cotton. It’s rare to find anything different that’s genuinely a vintage product. When buying older clothing it’s worth checking the wear and tear on it. If it’s had a hard life, it’ll be sheer, or too pilled, and generally looking on its last legs, so just pay close attention to the condition.

    Style

A vintage t-shirt is mostly about style. The unique, one-off, nostalgic piece of history that’ll be yours to wear and cherish and show off. This should be the priority of your choice. Because if you love the style, you will tend to wear it more often. Then, you can begin to investigate other facets of choosing a men’s vintage t-shirt after your aesthetic choice has been made.

    Fit

As the Ancient Chinese proverb goes: you do you, hun. Get a skinny, medium, or baggy fit. Generally, a vintage t-shirt lends itself to a baggier style because it sits within the realm of current styles. Do consider the armpits and where the shoulder finishes. Tight armpits are super uncomfortable, and draped shoulders sometimes make it difficult to wear with layers.

    Final Verdict

The best vintage t-shirts for men should be effortlessly cool and should feel like it resonates from an age gone by in a rose-tinted glasses kind of way. Pure nostalgia. It should also be in good condition too (which is where buying new t-shirts in retro styles comes into its own). That’s why we chose the Rhude t-shirt as our all-around favorite.

    FAQ

      • Check the labels. Always check the labels, folks. A vintage t-shirt is generally made from cotton or polyester, so a regular cotton setting on your washing machine is fine. Since cotton doesn’t shrink (and it being vintage, will have washed many times before) it is worth doing one hot wash of around 50/60 degrees to fully flush the previous life from it.

        • This is because they are one-off items. The fact that they might never be produced ever again, or they don’t have the same provenance or unique story behind that particular garment, can send some vintage t-shirts to astronomical prices. This can make them a good investment if you know how to play your cards right.

  • High Heels – Why Did Men Wear Shoes With Heels?

High Heels – Why Did Men Wear Shoes With Heels?

Hello, darlings! Gracie Opulanza here, your guide to all things opulent and luxurious in fashion. Today, let’s stride into a topic that’s as tall as the heels we’re discussing—men rocking high heels. That’s right, boys in bold pumps are not just a runway anomaly but a fascinating fusion of fashion and history, seasoned with a dash of rebellion.

From Battlefields to Runways: A Historical Catwalk

Believe it or not, high heels didn’t start in the glamorous wardrobes of Hollywood divas but rather in the dusty war zones of the 10th century. Persian soldiers were the original trendsetters, elevating their stature to stabilize themselves while shooting arrows on horseback. Imagine that—heels as combat gear! This masculine origin of high heels paints a starkly different picture from the delicate accessory associated with femininity today.

As we sashay through time to the 17th century, heels had become a symbol of high social status and military prowess among European aristocrats. Picture King Louis XIV, not just as a monarch, but as a style icon who legislated that only nobility could don high heels—talk about exclusive fashion! His heels weren’t just high; they were statements painted in bold red to broadcast power and privilege. Step aside, Christian Louboutin, the Sun King did it first!

High Heels For Men - They Wore Them First

    Why Men Ditched the Heel

Fast forward to the 18th century, when practicality began to overshadow opulence in men’s fashion—a movement known as the Great Male Renunciation. Men traded their flamboyant heels for more sober, practical footwear. It wasn’t just a change in fashion but a shift in societal values, prioritizing rationality over extravagance.

The Stiletto Revival: Men Are Reclaiming Heels

Now, let’s strut back to the present. Why are we seeing a revival of men in heels? It’s not just about fashion making a full circle; it’s about challenging norms and embracing versatility in masculine expression. At star-studded events like the Met Gala, men teetering in stilettos are making bold statements against gender conformity.

Luxury fashion, much to the dismay of purists, is blurring the lines between ‘his’ and ‘hers’. Men are reclaiming the heel, not to tower physically over others, but to elevate the conversation around gender fluidity in fashion. It’s a cheeky nod to the past with a fiercely modern twist.

Walking a Mile in Her Shoes—Literally

There’s a humorous side to this, of course. Watching men navigate the cobblestones of fashion in heels could be seen as a comedic act. Yet, it’s also a powerful metaphor for empathy and understanding—walking a mile in her shoes, quite literally. It challenges men to experience the world from a different perspective, even if it’s just at shin height.

    So, What’s the Point?

Is it all for a laugh? Perhaps sometimes. But it’s also a sign of men becoming more in touch with their style and breaking free from the mold. Fashion is, after all, a playground for the bold. And in this modern era, why shouldn’t men reclaim a piece of their own history?

As I watch this trend from the front rows of fashion weeks, decked in my own fabulous heels, I can’t help but applaud the courage. It takes guts to defy norms and express oneself with such visible, striking choices.

So, gentlemen, if you feel the urge to slip into a pair of high heels, remember it’s not just a statement of fashion but a step back into your history. You’re not just wearing a shoe; you’re wearing a story, a legacy of power, rebellion, and now, inclusivity.

Laugh if you will, but also think—heels are more than just an accessory; they’re an artifact of change. So go ahead, elevate your style and perhaps, just perhaps, your perspective too.

    Stay fabulous, Gracie

  • How To Wear Neutrals: 6 Easy Ways To Get Dressed In The Dark

How To Wear Neutrals: 6 Easy Ways To Get Dressed In The Dark

Colour has long been a contentious subject in menswear. While some guys pride themselves on broaching the punchier realms of the colour wheel, most are content to keep things low-key.

But while blink-and-miss-’em colours like black, white, grey and beige have always been a mainstay in the minimalist wardrobe, in recent years they’ve been thrust into the limelight.

So what does that mean for your wardrobe? Well, neutrals are no longer the supporting act – they’re taking centre stage. And while you might be accustomed to reaching for a white tee here and a pair of beige chinos there when the weather hots up, throw another neutral hue into the mix and it’s a trickier ball game. Do you pair up the same shade and risk looking like a nineties boyband member? Or do you throw on two different tones and hope for the best?

Helpfully, we’ve done the hard yards for you, decoding the easiest routes to neutral dressing. Because with this trend, there’s no sitting on the fence.

    What Are Neutrals?

Don’t be fooled into thinking neutrals are just shades of off-white. “A neutral colour is any ‘non-colour’ i.e. any colour that doesn’t appear on the traditional colour wheel, including black, grey, white and earth tones like beige and khaki,” explains celebrity stylist Sarah Ann Murray, who has dressed the likes of Jonah Hill, Samuel L. Jackson and Charlie Rowe.

In practice, the term ‘neutrals’ also refers to a series of colours that work together, even when thrown together in the dark (a real possibility in the winter months.) For this reason, sticking to these shades makes building a capsule wardrobe a cakewalk, providing the perfect foundation of which to add layers or pops of colour.

“In terms of accessibility, a neutral palette will always offer an appropriate style option for any occasion, any time of year, and there’s always a neutral shade and combination to suit everyone,” adds Murray. “Plus, if you’re shopping on a budget, these hues have an ability to elevate a look, as even on inexpensive materials they generally give off the look of natural fabrics which are usually pricier.”

6 Easy Ways To Wear Neutrals

    All-Black

No longer the preserve of maladjusted teens and funeral attire, the unsung hero of every man’s wardrobe is his all-black ensemble – it’s slimming, requires very little thought and can be tweaked to suit every season.

To make an entry-level move into darker territory, take your cue from rock’s leading men by slipping a leather jacket over a pair of slim-fit jeans and dark grey crew neck tee. Once you’ve got the basics down, you can start switching out items for something more adventurous such as black joggers or a suede bomber.

All-black-errthang isn’t just for off-duty occasions, though. It’s also possible to create smarter looks without looking like you’re auditioning for a Matrix remake. Start by pairing a black dress shirt with a black suit, or a black Oxford shirt with a charcoal suit. If the void of darkness proves too much, add pattern into the mix to lend your look some contrast.

    mango reiss river island reiss

    Neutral Tailoring

Many use the word ‘beige’ as a synonym for boring, but when put across some sharply-cut tailoring, it’s a far cry from flat. Growing weary of your well-worn navy suit? Beige, then – haters be damned – is the antidote.

Flying in the face of the tedium its name suggests, beige is actually a pretty ‘busy’ colour. Which means you’ll be attracting enough attention without going overdrive elsewhere. Steer well clear of loud ties and pocket squares (try complementary solid colour styles in blue, burgundy and darker shades of grey) and err conservative with classic dress shoes for a grounding base.

If you’re interested in injecting your suit fabric with some character, linen is a texture-rich choice and makes for a stellar summer wedding suit, too. Alternatively, try corduroy in the winter. Or, for something year-round, it’s hard to go wrong with cotton.

    Light Neutral Separates

Tailoring today isn’t what it used to be. Over the past decade, tailored separates have come over all casual, slowly but surely edging away from the image of the monocled, moustachioed dandy.

So, if you’re into the idea of paler tailoring but have more of a streetwear thing going on, dial down the formality by swapping the shirt for a crew neck tee, the brogues for trainers, and trying your hand at tonal looks by mixing chinos, trousers and blazers in colours like tan, white and beige.

Limit the tonal approach to two items, though, keeping one piece out of the light neutral spectrum. You’re going for clean and minimal, not earthy Home Depot paint chart.

    Brunello Cucinelli M&S zara j.crew

    Earth Tones

If monochrome was menswear’s first all-neutrals obsession, earth tones are its second. From muted moss to khaki, sand to russet, this colour palette is arguably one of the most versatile out there.

Thanks to their muted appearance, lighter shades of brown, green and orange are great for layering once the weather gets cooler. They’ll warm up your skin tone long after your summer tan fades, and sit right in that smart-casual sweet spot, making them a go-to for everything from the office to a Kanye-inspired night-out ensemble.

For a take that’s less desert rat, mix in some richer colours like burnt orange, mustard and shades of blue. Try teaming an olive green or brown lightweight cardigan with a navy blazer for a contemporary alternative to a three-piece suit. Alternatively, a chambray shirt worn with oatmeal-coloured trousers and a field jacket is the perfect go-to casual look.

    mango saturdays nyc zara burton

    All-White

One of the more advanced moves from the menswear playbook, there are several things to consider when wearing all-white if you are to look less Don Johnson more Riviera don.

Keep your white-out looks on point by not only switching up fabric textures, but colours too. Introducing shades of ivory and cream into the mix not only prevents you looking washed out but also not like a P Diddy impersonator.

Try teaming up a pair of white cotton trousers with a cream polo, long-sleeved tee or knitted T-shirt for a solid weekend look that’ll easily see you from day to night. Just remember, this look requires a healthy dose of confidence, a skin tone at least a few shades darker than fair and deep pockets for those inevitable dry cleaning bills.

zara carolina herrera officine generale reiss

    Neutrals With A Contrast Colour

Using light neutrals for the base of your outfit and adding a contrasting hue such as orange can help insipid shades pop and stop a look from blending into the background.

The trick here is still making sure the outfit goes together, which is best achieved by opting for soft tones. For example, a sage green coach jacket is a resounding yes, whereas a shiny, ’80s-esque puffer jacket in neon lime is a no.

Feeling apprehensive? Dip your toe (literally) in this method by using your shoes to work in a slightly punchier shade. Level-up the minimalist sneaker with a pair rendered in soft pink suede.

6 Key Pieces To By In A Neutral Colour

    White Jeans

White jeans are fashion Marmite, mostly due to the fact that they could miscast you as a Eurotrash weirdo. But with the right styling, it’s possible to come off more American Ivy League than Ibiza weekend warrior. Swap boyband rips and manhood-comprising skinny fits for a timeless slim fit, then simply ditch the socks and get your mankles out. Just take care that your pin-roll is on-point.

    Brown Outerwear

It’s a bolder statement than Kanye saying his latest album is the greatest ever made, but we’ll go out on a limb to say that neutrals are the new black. This is particularly true in the case of outerwear, when inky shades can feel funereal. Instead, arm yourself with that new menswear classic, the camel coat, as well as a chocolate suede jacket brown leather bomber.

    Grey Trousers

No well-edited wardrobe is complete without a pair of grey trousers, whether they’re swiped from a suit or a standalone pair that skews more casual. One of their most redeeming features is that they afford you the opportunity to get experimental with the colour of your footwear, so as well as pairing well with minimalist sneaker, they’ll also sit handsomely with a pair in soft pink suede.

    Neutral Knitwear

The words ‘beige’ and ‘knitwear’, when used in conjunction, bring about mental images of cardigan-wearing septuagenarians, but it’s a look that goes beyond pureed food. Neutral knitwear, be it a cashmere-blend roll neck or zip-up polo shirt, is a key layering component of male wardrobe. Saying the white sneaker is an essential part of the modern wardrobe is like stating the sky is blue or that a bear does its business in the woods. Damn obvious. However, stripped-back kicks truly come into their own in the case of neutral outfits that whisper rather than scream style. Leggings for Men – Embracing the Stretch with Style

Hello, darlings! Gracie Opulanza here, ready to dive into a topic that’s as snug as it is stylish—leggings for men! Yes, you heard it right. It’s time for the gents to embrace the comfort and dashing appeal of this form-fitting marvel. Now, before you raise your eyebrows, let me take you on a sartorial journey where comfort meets luxury, and humor meets fashion.

    A Snug Fit from History

Remember the times when legends like Queen and Kiss strutted on stage in tight lycra? They were not just making music; they were making fashion statements. If Freddie Mercury could rock those stretchy sensations with flamboyance, why can’t the modern man? It’s not just about reliving the rock star era; it’s about redefining it. Wearing leggings today is like giving a nod to a rhythmic past while tuning the strings to the comfort of the present.

    Why Leggings? Here’s the Stretch

Men’s leggings, or ‘meggings’ as they are affectionately known, are no longer confined to the realms of gym wear. They have strutted onto the high streets with a vengeance. Why, you ask? Because who wouldn’t want to feel like they’re wearing a cloud while looking sharp as a tack? Leggings for men are like a secret weapon; under the radar but completely transformative. They hug the legs like a second skin, yet give you enough stretch to perform a spontaneous high-kick should the occasion arise.

    Kapow Meggings

    Dressing Up the Meggings

Now, let’s get to the meat of the matter—how to wear these bad boys with style. First off, balance is key. If you’re going snug down below, keep it relaxed on top. A loose tunic or a smart, longline blazer can be your best friends. They not only cover the essentials but also add an effortless cool to your overall look.

For a casual day out, why not pair your leggings with a chunky knit sweater? It’s like telling the world, “Yes, I’m this comfortable, and I make it look good.” If you’re venturing into the wild, urban or otherwise, a pair of rugged boots and a denim jacket over your leggings will have you looking like an off-duty model ready to conquer the streets.

Colors and Prints: The Wilder, The Better

While black leggings are every minimalist’s dream, don’t shy away from colors and prints. A splash of color or a bold pattern can elevate your leggings from undergarments to the star of the show. Think about it—a pair of azure blue leggings under a grey trench coat? You’re not just walking; you’re making a statement.

    kapowleggings

    When Humor Meets Style

Now, gentlemen, let’s chat about the elephant in the room with a smile. Yes, leggings are form-fitting, and yes, they leave little to the imagination. But isn’t that just a way to show you’re comfortable in your own skin? Wearing leggings is like saying, “I’m here, I’m bold, and I’ve got the legs to prove it!” It’s about wearing confidence as your best accessory.

    Final Stretch: Embrace the Comfort

In a world where fashion meets function, leggings for men are a testament to the evolving landscape of menswear. They are practical, they’re stylish, and they break the mold. So why not give them a whirl? Remember, it’s about stretching your style boundaries while keeping things snug and splendid.

So there you have it, my dear fashion-forward friends. Leggings for men are not just a passing trend; they are a lifestyle choice. They are about comfort that doesn’t compromise on style, about humor that walks hand in hand with high fashion. Step into some meggings and step up your fashion game. Because, after all, life’s too short to wear boring clothes!

Who says meetings have to be dull? Ladies, it’s time to channel your inner boss with a touch of gold. Swap out that predictable pearl necklace for a chunky gold chain over a sleek, tailored suit. • A vintage shopping day in New York – Permanent Style

A vintage shopping day in New York – Permanent Style

Recently myself, photographer Alex Natt and Carl and Oliver from Rubato (above) spent a day vintage shopping in New York. It was a lot of fun, and also I think interesting for those that are fairly new to vintage, or can find the process frustrating.

We all ended up buying something but not that much, and rarely what we set out for. Carl was not expecting to pick up a Ralph Lauren Purple Label jacket, for example, and would never have put it on a shopping list at the beginning of the day. But when he found one in beautiful wool and silk – at a good price and a perfect fit (below) – he still ended up getting it.

To me this reflects the breadth of opportunity with vintage. For you’re not just shopping one season but dozens of them, from different eras, with different silhouettes and a greater range of materials. We hadn’t ever seen this cloth before and as RL materials are usually exclusive, it was always likely to be unusual.

Serendipity like this is a big attraction of vintage shopping. You’re more likely to be taken by surprise, and the clothes you’re looking at won’t be ones you’ve already seen online, or in that season’s advertising and all over social media.

    My purchase was similarly unexpected.

I’ve always had a weakness for suede jackets – bombers, overshirts and blazers. But I’ve never owned a western-style suede jacket, and instinctively thought it would be too unusual for me.

When we visited Front General, Alex pointed out one in a roughout-suede hanging on the wall (always dangerous) and I tried it on. The cut really worked, and the heavy suede was beautiful – rugged and thick, with a shape that had been moulded by many years of wear.

Of course, other brands sell modern versions and I might have seen one there (eg RRL or Buck Mason). But I wouldn’t have had the same open-minded approach. For me at least, vintage engenders this receptive attitude, ready to try anything and be inspired. And accept you might walk away empty-handed as well.

We tried on a lot of things we didn’t buy, and wouldn’t necessarily have seen in a regular shop. Above, for example, Carl is trying on an old Polo polo coat and I’m wearing a scarlet duffle coat, also Ralph Lauren.

That red rather overwhelmed me, particularly in the long length of those old Ralph ones – but it did mean I knew my size in case I ever saw one on eBay, and I now have a search set up.

In fact, something else I tried worked out very well in that way. The tassel loafers I featured recently on PS were a model I originally saw at Crowley’s but were just a size too big. I looked on eBay, and luckily found a pair in the right size.

For what it’s worth, I would never do that with something that was available in a store. It will always be more expensive of course, but the owner deserves the margin for sorting through mountains of stuff, paying the rent to display the best things, and then being there for me to try on and buy.

Perhaps that’s a luxury of having the money do so, but I do think people should take responsibility for their actions in that way if they have the money. If they don’t, the shops will disappear.

Oliver’s experience was a little different, in that he didn’t find anything inspiring, but he had been looking for some US Army chinos for a long time, and found a decent pair at 10ft Single (above).

It’s easy to feel like this kind of military clothing is everywhere, and so vintage is actually not that variable. It’s always the same field jackets, varsity jackets and denim jackets. But often that means you just need to seek out a different kind of vintage shop – like Crowley, which has such a huge range of Ralph Lauren and similarly inspired clothing. The popularity of vintage means more of these shops or sites are springing up.

Plus eBay has more variety than you could possibly hope for. Lucas has been on a deep dive into Giorgio Armani for the past couple of years, and now has a crazy knowledge of all the labels, periods and materials. Perhaps he’ll open his own Armani-and-similar-eighties-tailoring shop some day.

Alex, the fourth member of that group, is also a good example of different tastes. He’s more into modern vintage and knows all the history of the outdoor brands like Eddie Bauer and North Face.

It’s great shopping with a friend like that, as they’ll point out and tell you about pieces you’d never consider. He didn’t buy anything the day we all went, but he had bought a US parka earlier in the week, and that was the budget blown.

Vintage is not for everyone. I’ve spoken to quite a few readers about this in recent years, and it’s not suited to those that aren’t into clothes enough to talk about them and research them. Perhaps like someone who enjoys cooking, but isn’t going to spend the time talking to their local butcher or travelling to a farmers market.

I’m still very much a novice, but in the past five years I’ve bought many of my favourite pieces of clothing vintage, and found it incredibly interesting and enjoyable. I hope this first-hand experience helps explain a little where the joy comes from.

Rubato are in London for their next trunk show from May 23-25, being hosted by Taillour at their atelier.

How Do You Know if Someone Is the One? Psychologists Reveal

You’ve probably heard the saying “When you know, you know.” But how do you know you found the one? Relationships, we can probably all agree, are a tricky business at the best of times.

Getting from a swipe right on Tinder, to making it past the first date and then sailing into ‘official relationship’ territory, well it can all feel a lot like running a gauntlet that you’ve been incredibly poorly prepared for.

But, if you do manage to make it successfully into coupledom — slaps on backs and clinking glasses from all of us here – the next relationship question you’ll need to ask yourself is this; are they really ‘The One’?

Now regardless of whether you’re onboard with the idea that there’s just one single person out there, among the 7.6 billion people on Earth, that you’re destined to spend the rest of your life with, the fact remains that some people are just better suited to each other. Here’s a cute Answers post talking about that magic.

    iStock / LittleBee80

It’s also true that, once you’ve presumably found this adorably compatible creature, knowing whether you’re meant to be together long-term, if she loves you, or something akin to lusty convenience, is again, well, a bit tricky.

Do you feel calm, at peace, and genuinely happy? That is a great indicator.

“When you’ve found The One, the relationship just flows. Things are fairly easy,” says the admirably optimistic Jeannie Assimos, Chief of Advice at online dating site eHarmony. “You understand each other’s viewpoints and perceptions, and either accept them or feel the same way. If a relationship is characterized by conflict, strife or butting heads on a regular basis, that likely tells you the compatibility is not there.”

    Slide

TAKE YOUR RELATIONSHIP TO THE NEXT LEVEL

“A huge indicator that you’ve found The One? It’s just easy being with this person,” she says. “You feel at home, totally comfortable, and are able to be yourself. Paying attention to how we feel when we’re around someone is important. Do you feel calm, at peace, and genuinely happy? That is a great indicator.”

    iStock / PeopleImages

Trusting your gut feeling, however, can feel like a leap of faith. So how about a checklist of science-backed indicators instead?

Luckily, there’s a cohort of top psychologists and relationship experts out there who have made it their mission to uncover the complexities and subtleties of love’s effect on the brain. From changes in your vocabulary to tell-tale Instagram behavior, here’s the expert take on whether you’re dealing with a fling or the real thing.

    Your Brain Changes

A sure-fire way to indicator of a relationship being the real deal is that you don’t experience that ‘out of sight, out of mind’ phenomenon when your partner isn’t around. Instead, you’ll tend to think about them a lot – almost all the time, in fact.

Love and genuine attachment actually alter the biochemical reactions taking place in your brain

A 2005 study carried out by researchers at New York’s Stony Brook University suggests this is because real love and genuine attachment actually alter the biochemical reactions taking place in your brain.

When you think about The One, you’ll get a surge of happiness-boosting neurotransmitter dopamine plus a lighting up of the brain’s reward centers.

    iStock / nd3000

All of that makes us feel warm and fuzzy, which is why we’re more likely to keep indulging in these happy thoughts regularly. Especially in the earlier stages of a strong relationship, when the effects are at their most potent.

    Your Pronouns Change

As Assimos quite rightly points out: “The One is not going to try and change you. They’ll accept you for who you are, and become your biggest supporter in life.”

Those who feel deeply connected to their partner are more likely to use plural pronouns such as ‘we’ and ‘us’

Broadly speaking, that’s true. However, one way in which they will inevitably, albeit unintentionally, change you is by influencing your daily pronoun use.

    Shutterstock / Milan Ilic Photographer

In a 2002 study, psychologists at the University of Texas at Austin, found that those who feel deeply connected to their partner are more likely to use plural pronouns such as ‘we’ and ‘us’, rather than the singular ‘I’ or ‘me’.

The findings have since been confirmed by every person who’s ever had to attend a couples’ dinner as a singleton. And we feel for you.

    You’re Willing To Fight

Old Willy Shakes was right on the money when he declared the course of true love to be an often rocky road. But as research psychologist Luis Rubén de Borbón observes, a willingness to fight for the success of your relationship is what really sets The One apart. Even more so than how ‘compatible’ two people might be on paper.

A successful relationship… hangs on by the sheer will power and want to stay in a relationship.

“Everyone who is unhappy [in their relationship] naturally blames it on the facade of compatibility,” he writes. “They fail to realize and comprehend that a successful relationship does not hinge its posterity on how alike you are, instead it hangs on by the sheer willpower and want to stay in a relationship.”

Leading life coach, Olga Levancuka, agrees: “You need to keep in mind that finding The One doesn’t mean finding a version of yourself who shares exactly the same passions or meets your exact expectations,” she says.

“It means finding someone who is prepared to make your relationship work and you’re prepared to do the same. Relationships aren’t all about romantic getaways and butterflies, they can be hard work and you both have to be prepared to build solid foundations.”

    You Happily Sacrifice

As Levancuka describes, if you’ve met The One, you’ll both be cool with making certain sacrifices for each other, even if historically, you’ve always been more about looking out for yourself as number one.

Psychologists call these ‘costly commitment signals’ – when we carry out acts or behave in ways that are likely to ‘cost’ us either in terms of our time, money or our emotions, simply because we want to help our significant other.

    Shutterstock / nd3000

A 2015 study carried out by psychologists at Japan’s Kobe University, found that relationships where this kind of behavior was either absent or infrequent, were less likely to go the distance.

    You Don’t Overshare

Those folks who post loved-up couple selfies on the regular? They’re likely trying their best to compensate for a bond that, in all reality, just isn’t there. According to Levancuka, if your partner isn’t plastering your relationship all over their social media feeds, it’s actually a strong indicator that all’s well in Couplesville.

If they are oversharing it could be a sign of insecurity

“Unfortunately, social media is now an essential part of our daily lives, to the point where every moment needs to be documented and recorded. Happy couples who take their relationship seriously, however, tend not to share much information about their relationship online,” she explains.

    Shutterstock / Monkey Business Images

“It’s perfectly normal for your partner to share the occasional picture of you, but happy couples are busy enjoying each other’s company in the present. This means that they’re not going to stop enjoying each other’s company just to post a status or snap a selfie.

“If they are oversharing it could be a sign of insecurity, or that they’re more concerned about how you add to their social image rather than being focused on how you enrich their day-to-day life.”

You’ve Polled Your Friends and Family

According to psychologists, what those closest to us think of our partner can have a huge influence on how a relationship turns out.

When you’ve found The One, you want everyone in your life to meet them

A 2014 study also found that since those around us can have such an impact on our love lives, it’s common to want to ‘marshall support’ for your budding romance.

So, if you’ve not only introduced your partner to your friends and family but also found yourself soliciting feedback from all parties concerned while simultaneously highlighting all your partner’s virtues, it’s highly likely you’ve found The One – especially if everyone gelled on the night.

    Shutterstock / Syda Productions

“When you’ve found The One, you want everyone in your life to meet them, and get to know them,” says Assimos. “You are genuinely excited about the prospect of being with this person, and you’re no longer are looking around to see what else is out there.”

    They Are Your #1 Cheerleader

According to famed psychological researcher Dr. John Gottman, supporting each other’s ‘life dreams’, aka your long-term goals and ambitions, is a key component of a healthy and lasting relationship.

Couples who focused on building something together, whether it be a business or working towards a shared goal, tended to stay together the longest.

For Gottman, The One should “look up to you, admire you, and respect you.” In other words, they’ll become your biggest champion and an ever-reliable source of support and encouragement.

Levancuka takes the same view: “The happiest relationships are built on mutual respect, so even if you both have different interests you want to pursue, The One will be there to encourage and support you.”

    Shutterstock / George Rudy

You’ll find yourself heavily invested in helping to build them up, too. In fact, Gottman’s years of research found that couples who focused on building something together, whether it be a business or working towards a shared goal, tended to stay together the longest.

Bedroom Gymnastics Isn’t Your Only Hobby

Naturally, sex plays a huge part in a healthy relationship, and being physically attracted to your partner as well as enjoying their company is a vital checkpoint.

If all your plans somehow incorporate time alone where you might be able to have sex then the alarm bells should start ringing.

But if sex is the only thing you do together when you’ve managed to carve out some downtime, we’re very sorry to point out that this may not be a good sign.

    Shutterstock / Y Photo Studio

“Sex is great and you should be having lots of it, but it’s important to build a stronger, emotional bond beyond that,” says Levancuka. “If all your plans somehow incorporate time alone where you might be able to have sex then the alarm bells should start ringing. With The One, you need to be able to have fun around each other without the need for sex.”

    You’re In Sync

“When you’re synced with your partner you are fully present with that person – mind and body. In a romantic relationship, it’s important to feel connected to someone in this way. When that connection is there, we feel seen, heard, valued, respected, and cherished,” says Levancuka.

But if you thought this whole business of synchronicity was more pseudoscience than anything concrete, a 2016 paper published by research psychologists is here to prove you wrong.

    Shutterstock / George Rudy

As Levancuka quite rightly asserts: “Scientists have found that some couples are so in tune that their brains begin to work in sync. That means they’ve reached a state in which their nervous systems are ticking over in harmony, helping them to read each other’s thoughts and emotions.”

According to the researchers, just sitting next to The One for 15 minutes is enough to sync up.

Now you’ve got the checklist, better start paying a closer eye to what’s going on up top.

  • The Best Italian Menswear Brands

    The Best Italian Menswear Brands

“Italians see fashion as a search for beauty,” says Matteo Persivale, one of Milan’s best-dressed men and a senior writer at Corriere della Serra, the country’s leading daily newspaper.

Perhaps that’s why those in less tropical climes are still so drawn to the Italianate style — it breaks free of the workaday pragmatism of traditional tailoring, and lives with a passion that most rarely allow their more buttoned-up wardrobes to experience.

Italian style has a classic quality about it, but right now it’s also pushing envelopes and generating hype for fun. Luxury brands like Gucci, Moncler and Stone Island – all with strikingly different heritage – are enjoying crossover success, appealing to one-percenters and streetwear-loving millennials alike.

Not that you have to be a high roller to sprinkle some sprezzatura over your wardrobe. Here are 10 of the finest Italian menswear brands, and the particulars of their own search for beauty.

    Incotex

    Best For: Versatile Trousers

Venetian label Incotex is part of the much-loved Slowear collective — a group of craftsmen and design houses with a shared belief in producing higher quality clothes and a distinct aversion to disposable garments and fast fashion. The brand’s simple but expertly built chinos are a staple of most Italian men’s wardrobes, where their understated colourways and traditional detailing means they’re equally at home below a blazer or paired with a T-shirt and sneakers.

    Aspesi

    Best For: Expertly Engineered Outerwear

Since 1969, Aspesi has specialised in the kind of lifelong clothing companions that will weather any storm and grow better with age. The brand’s founder, Alberto Aspesi, seldom gives interviews and designs his garments without any outer logos. Instead, he lets the garments speak for themselves, mainly through their precise craftsmanship and rich materials. Its field jackets, for example, are some of the most coveted in the world thanks to their military-issue detailing, utilitarian feel, and year-round versatility.

    Brunello Cucinelli

    Best For: Indulgent Investment Pieces

It’s little wonder the Italian press dubs Mr Brunello Cucinelli ‘The King of Cashmere’. Aged 25, having recently dropped out of university, he took the bold step of being the first to dye the ultra soft textile to create his designs. Today, Cucinelli’s clothes sit at the higher-end of the men’s market, worn by everyone from the Hollywood elite to royalty, but they’re characterised by such next-level craftsmanship that they’re well worth saving up for.

    Rubinacci

    Best For: Neapolitan Flair

Triple-pleated trousers! Voluptuous silk pocket squares! Butter-soft ‘Belgian’ loafers! Rubinacci is Neopolitan flair incarnate. But this dandified label isn’t just the fare of Pitti Peacocks and their overly choreographed carelessness, this is the real deal. Founded under the watch of Gennaro Rubinacci in 1932, the brand continues to be run three generations later by the same family. The Napoli-based house’s construction is near masterful, with an emphasis on super light tailoring and exquisite detailing: most Rubinacci blazers, for example, are silk-lined and printed with extravagant baroque scenes.

    Gucci

    Best For: High-Fashion Fun

Under the visionary gaze of Alessandro Michele, one of Italy’s most established fashion houses has finally got its groove back. Though timeless staples like the horsebit loafer add a pinch of classic Ivy League style to any outfit, it’s in the newer, more outlandish designs and collaborations that Gucci has come to life (and been restored to the top of luxury fashion’s best-seller list). Don the label’s statement outerwear or ornately embroidered knitwear for a dose of go-to-hell Italian expressionism.

    Loro Piana

    Best For: Cashmere

For Loro Piana, it’s all about the fabric. Since its conception in 1924, this family business has weaved some of the finest cashmere known to man and is still the world’s largest producer of the soft stuff today. That’s not to say the design and finishing aren’t pretty special too — expect versatile wardrobe staples like chambray shirts and suede trucker jackets in a range of high-tech finishes. The wind and water-resistant Storm System coating, for example, protects its baby cashmere without ever diminishing its handfeel.

    Tod’s

    Best For: Statement Footwear

Few things embody that certain un certo non so che (the Italian version of ‘je ne sais quoi’) like a pair of Tod’s Gommino driving shoes. Their soft soles, each set on the brand’s signature rubber pebbles (133 to be exact), and illuminated colourways show a healthy disdain for our soggy Anglo Saxon weather, but they’re worth a punt no matter the climate. Owned by the achingly stylish Della Valle family, Tod’s has also developed a wider range of sturdier, year-round options that will complement any wardrobe. We particularly like its take on the traditional chukka boot.

    Armani

    Best For: Double-Breasted Suiting

Perhaps Italy’s best-known designer, Giorgio Armani is a purveyor, ambassador and creator of truly immaculate tailoring. The house, which is still overseen by the eponymous man himself, made its mark with the kind of flawless double-breasted suits that could create an A-lister overnight (we’re looking at you, Mr Gere), with subtle touches such as patch pockets on half-lined blazers that continue to be adored the world over.

    Prada

    Best For: Retro Colour

After starting life as a high-end leather goods shop in 1913, Prada quickly became a darling of the Italian royal family and its official supplier of livery and court clothing. Though today we don’t have much use for ornamental gold epaulettes, there is a space in most wardrobes for the label’s distinctly retro, 1970s-inflected suiting, mid-century Cuban collar shirts and bold, nigh-on fluorescent sneakers.

Steve McQueen wore Persols religiously, which tells you pretty much everything you need to know about the eyewear dons. Rugged yet refined, equally at home on the open road as on the red carpets of Venice, a pair of Persols is the ultimate Italian accessory. Their silver hallmark, dubbed the ‘Supreme Arrow’, is a sign of remarkable build quality and badass elegance wherever it’s spotted. One for the pub quiz: the company developed the first ever flexible stem sunglasses, which allow the arms to contour to any head shape.

How To Dress Like an Italian

    Accessorise Artfully

“Italy’s a diverse country, with a diverse climate, diverse habits and diverse cultures,” says Persivale. As such, the accessories that Italian men wear are personal, unique and distinctive.

“Your ties, pocket squares, the patterns of your fabrics: every accessory carries the values of the Italian man who wears it.” Translated, accessories can be extravagant and overstated (most often in the south) or muted and understated (in Milan and the north), but they should always be true to the wearer’s own style.

    Live And Breathe Sprezzatura

“Sprezzatura is the gift of making difficult things look easy,” says Persivale. “It’s hard to explain to people that it can’t be forced.

“Look into yourself, find the piece of wardrobe that better expresses your taste, your attitude, and go ahead. Rules aren’t really there any more, just break them in a way that makes sense to you, and allow them to tell a story.”

    Master Unstructured Tailoring

Lighter, less structured tailoring is a staple of Italian dressing. And even though it lends a more relaxed look to an ensemble, there are still conventions to observe.

“A higher armhole and a fuller sleeve are a thing of beauty on unstructured suiting,” says Persivale. “Also, I’d rather have a slightly higher waist than a too-low waist.”

    Trouser Length Is Everything

“I’d always advise paying attention to the way the leg falls on your shoe when you’re having your trousers altered,” says Persivale. “It doesn’t matter if you’re sample size or need significant alterations, find the best tailor for alterations that you can afford.”

The general rule for elegant trousering the Italian way is simple: “Show your shoe without necessarily showing your ankle.”

  • The Best Taper Fade Haircuts For Men And How To Get Them

The Best Taper Fade Haircuts For Men And How To Get Them

It was only a generation ago (give or take) that a basin-cut was still a legitimate men’s hairstyle for some barbers. Before the barbershop renaissance in the 21st century, the trade often amounted to a hairy half hour in the chair as someone with minimal training took a hack-it-and-hope approach to your head.

A lot has changed. These days even high-street barbers are capable of creating haircuts akin to artwork, using tools that wouldn’t look out of place in an operating theatre.

Case in point: the taper fade.

This modern haircut element is the perfect mix of classic and contemporary, providing the ideal foundation upon which to build almost any style. As sharp on a LinkedIn bio as it is on a Tinder one, it’s a next-level barbering technique and one that will get you noticed. But just what exactly is it?

Taper Vs. Fade: What’s The Difference?

The first thing to understand about the taper fade is that it is actually an amalgamation of two different barbering tricks – somewhat unsurprisingly, the taper and the fade.

These two cutting methods are similar in that they both offer a way to graduate smoothly between differing lengths of hair. The distinction between the two is that a taper deals with longer hair and sculpts using both scissors and clippers, while a fade is performed with clippers only and is much shorter, right down to the skin usually.

Leading barber Joe Mills, of Joe & Co., has a handy analogy to make it clear.

“Think about trousers that taper, says Mills. “They gradually get narrower. So, in haircut terms, a taper is not down to skin but the hair gradually gets shorter. A fade is similar but fades away entirely, hence the term ‘skin fade’. It’s more extreme than a taper.”

What Is A Taper Fade Haircut?

Combining a taper with a fade allows barbers to neatly transition from hair of a significant length, right down to a skin fade with – quite literally – razor-sharp precision. This creates the sort of modern, polished look that would have had the hairdressers of yesteryear scratching at their butchered barnets in astonishment.

What is a taper fade haircut

How Did The Taper Fade Become Popular?

Both tapered and faded styles have had a huge resurgence over the past few years, thanks in no small part to certain period dramas opening men’s eyes to a new (or old) style of grooming.

“It descended from the old days when hair clippers were hand powered and you could only go short,” explains Mikey Pearson, director of Manifesto barbershop. “They would cut along the hairline to create a kind of wedge then blend it in with scissors. If hair flicked out from above the ears you would be classed as ‘scruffy’.”

The taper fade harks back to this, while keeping one foot firmly planted in the here and now, making it the trim of choice for so many contemporary, style-conscious gents.

“It’s a clean, crisp look,” says Pearson. “And thanks to the likes of the Peaky Blinders we’re seeing more and more men asking for it.”

Tommy Shelby Peaky Blinders Taper Fade Haircut for men

    Is It For You?

The taper fade is a versatile trim, because it’s essentially a boss-level version of the short back and sides. It can be worn with anything from a short crop to an all-singing, all-shiny pompadour on top. Because of this versatility, it’s a cut that can be adapted to suit most face shapes.

However, if you’re cursed with a boat race longer than Seabiscuit’s and want to try this style, you’re best advised to steer clear of anything with too much height. The close-cut sides and length left on top mean that the taper fade naturally lends the face some additional length. Which, unless you’re deliberately going for the equine vibe, is probably something to avoid.

“The taper fade is suited to most as you can adapt the height and shape of the fade and weight of the blend to suit any client,” explains Tom Chapman, founder of the Lions Barber Collective and ambassador to The Bluebeards Revenge. “If you have a more daring client in the chair you can take the shortest grad up pretty high and leave a heavy blend. You can also leave more weight at the sides behind the ear by creating an arch as your base shape instead of the usual straight shape.”

The Best Taper Fade Styles And How To Get Them

Before you buzz off to the barbers for one of the decade’s defining chops, take a look at some of the style’s most popular variations for a bit of follicular inspiration.

    Taper Fade & Short Crop

They say less is more and, looking at the minimalist styling of this particular trim, we’re inclined to agree. It’s perfect for the kind of guy who wants something smart and low maintenance that won’t leave him wincing at old photographs 10 years down the line.

“This style has a very graduated skin-fade from the base up to a longer layer,” explains Mark Woolley, founder of Electric Hairdressing. “The top layer is slightly disconnected from the back and sides.”

Think this might be the cut for you? Woolley always recommends taking a photo along with you to avoid any awkward, post-trim mirror moments.

“You ultimately want to ask for a fading cut with a slightly disconnected top layer which gives you a nice, choppy texture,” he says.

Apply a salt spray or matte clay/paste roughly with your fingers to increase separation and help emphasise the natural, care-free texture created on top.

    Taper Fade & Pompadour

If Johnny Cash had been born 60 years later, there’s no doubt that this would be the do he’d be rocking. A perfect blend of old and new, the pompadour is a nod to one of the defining styles of the last century, while the taper fade on the back and sides brings things right up to date.

So, how can you get the look? Again, you’ll want some inspiration.

“A picture is worth a hundred words,” says Mills. “This is doubly true when getting a cut. Take an image in so at least your barber knows what you are thinking. The terminology we use can be confusing and for me the consultation with the client is key.”

Mills adds that the trick to getting the cut right is to know how close you want to go at the back and sides. “Ideally the top should be at least four or five inches longer than at the back and sides,” he says.

“To style it you will need a decent hair dryer and a Denman vent brush,” advises Mills. “This isn’t a wash and go look.

“I recommend a styling mousse on clean damp hair. Evenly distribute a tangerine-sized amount through the hair and then using your brush and dryer, style it back away from the face creating height and direction.” Finish with a strong-hold hair spray if you find your style loses its pomp after a couple of hours.

    Taper Fade & Side-Swept Length

Generally speaking, the graduated back and sides of a taper fade is geared towards shorter haircuts. However, with some clever, asymmetrical styling, there’s no reason you can’t embrace your inner grunger at the same time.

“The key characteristics of this cut are the low fade on the back and sides with a disconnected top,” says Pearson.

“Ask for a low fade, something like a five into a four. Keep the top disconnected, cutting short to long to keep length at the fringe. As always I would recommend taking a photo with you.”

In terms of styling at home, Pearson suggests using a volume spray in damp hair and blow drying upwards. Once dry, he recommends finishing off with a matte clay to add texture.

    Taper Fade & Short Braids

A few short braids or dreads thrown into the mix adds a nice touch of personality to a taper fade, while remaining clean and smart enough to dress up or down. Highly-experienced barber Joseph Lanzante, who runs his own barbering academy, is certainly a fan.

“A taper fade finished with short dreads on top has become a very popular haircut as it provides a clean and stylish finish to the overall style,” he says.

“To create a clean-cut taper fade, you will need to ask your barber for a grade one cut on the back, fading up to grade two and three. Make sure you keep your hair long on top long to ensure you can create the short dreads that are key to this style.”

Another plus point for this particular style is that management at home couldn’t be easier. Lanzante recommends nothing more complex than coconut oil. Rub the oil through the hair to keep it nourished and moisturised but be careful not to use too much or it could wind up looking oily.
