    REVLON Colorstay Suede Ink Lipstick

001 Gut Instinct, 002 No Rules, 005 Hot Girl & 008 That Girl

I have three more of these, but these four are my favourites. They left a terrible first impression, as they were so dry and refused to swatch. I don’t know if I am to blame, as before I swatched them, I took a ton of photos, so they were opened for quite a while or they all have this dry layer on the top, but once I “swatched it off”, these became as Revlon describes them – creamy and opaque in one swipe. And what a great formula they are. Once they set on the lips, which is quick, they don’t wipe off or smudge, they just stay in their place like a liquid matte lipstick. Formula is thin and matte, so don’t expect any nourishment from these, they are most similar to Oriflame’s The One Unlimited Ultra Fix, which are another of my favourites (but Revlon’s are better). I can handle them fine and don’t find them drying, but my lips don’t often get dry. Basically if you can handle long lasting matte liquid lipsticks, you’re going to love these. I admire not just their amazing staying power, but also the shades. I’m a big fan of 001 Gut Instinct, which is a colour similar to my natural lips. It looks more peachy in the tube, but on the lips it’s more neutral. I also really like 002 No Rules, which is a deeper nude and 008 That Girl, a light pink shade. 005 Hot Girl is also a nice shade, despite looking so peachy orange in the tube. These need an oil remover to get off and can survive so much.

    LAZARTIGUE Huile de Reves

I repurchased this recently and while I was without it, trying to use up my other oils, I was really missing it. It’s quite unique, as it’s very light for an oil that contains just proper oils and no silicones, and it has an effect that resembles silicone oils. It’s got a dry oil texture and it’s the lightest such oil I’ve tried, so I can use more often than other regular oils before my hair starts feeling like it needs a wash. It also doesn’t it start smelling rancid on the hair in the following days like some other oils do (like coconut). I either use this as an overnight treatment or in the morning to tame nourish dry hair and tame the frizz. It’s so expensive, but I’ve grown to really love it in the years I’ve been using it.

    REVLON PROFESSIONAL Orofluido Elixir

Last month I “rediscovered” Sebastian Professional Dark Oil and this month I picked up Orofluido again. It’s an ancient favourite, but I have so many similar products to use up, I’ve neglected it. It’s one of the best silicone oils I’ve tried, Moroccanoil is the other one, but that one is so expensive. I apply a lot of it on damp hair after washing and it helps my hair stay nourished longer. It’s also great on dry hair where it adds the final touches – tames, pull it all together and adds shine. It smells so great with the notes of amber and vanilla. The packaging is different now and they sell 50 ml bottles too.

    SVR Topialyse Huile Lavante

    Anti-irritation lipid-restoring Anti-itching cleansing gel

I liked this the moment I tried it. I didn’t expect it to be an actual oil, as I’ve tried a few such shower gel oils and they are all regular gels, but this one is a lot more like an oil and turns into a milky emulsion with water. It’s not as rich as L’Occitane’s, but better than the thin Balea shower oil. It’s designed for sensitive, itchy, dry skin and can be used for anything. I love it for the body, it’s nice on the face too (but it doesn’t take off makeup and it’s not as kind to the eyes as I’d expect from a product like this), while for the hair I surprisingly find it makes my hair too squeaky clean. It’s nourishing on the skin, but for my hair it’s too stripping – odd. It’s fragranced with a gentle warm clean scent (I’m guessing the fragrance they used is hypoallergenic). I don’t know if it helps with itching, but the skin feels comfortable after washing.

SCHWARZKOPF FA Fiji Dream Shower Gel

I picked this one only because it was on offer and after a few days of using it finally hit me why it smells so familiar – it smells so much like Bath & Body Works Champagne Apple & Honey, one of my favourite scents from them. It’s a lovely sweet fruity scent, more like apple than watermelon or ylang-ylang. Formula is nothing special like at most drugstore shower gels, but it foams ok.

    WISHLIST

MOROCCANOIL Frizz Shield Spray – Moroccanoil already has some of the best anti-frizz products, namely their Smoothing mask, conditioner and cream. I look forward to the launch of this spray. It kinds of sound like the Color Wow spray, which does nothing on me, while I know I can rely on Moroccanoil.

CATRICE Soft Glam Filter Fluid – clearly an attempted dupe of Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Filter (or the E.l.f. version). I have the Hollywood one, which I find is nothing special for the price. This one comes in many shades which makes me hopeful it has more coverage than CT one. I might get it.

CATRICE Soft Glam Filter Powder – this vaguely reminds me of Guerlain’s Meteorites, as it has three colour correcting colours green, violet and pink. It promises a naturally radiant finish and a soft focus effect.

CATRICE Cheek Affair Blush & Highlighter Palette – a blush-highlighter duo. 010 looks like a nice pink shade.

CATRICE Highlighting Hero Duo Pencil – a combination of a matte and shimmery pencil. Looks nice for using in the waterline (matte) and in the inner corners.

CATRICE AirBlush Glow 050 Berry Haze – they added new shades to this line. I had one, which looked nice in the pan, but ended up too peachy for my taste, while I liked the formula. The formula is not nearly as glowy as the Glow Cheek version, but it’s a good satin-look blush.

ESSENCE blend & line eyeshadow stick – could these finally be a replacement for the long discontinued and great such crayon eyeshadow pencils Essence had years ago?

CATRICE Marble-licious Liquid Lip Balm – tinted nourishing lip glosses. There are five shades.

CATRICE Magic Shaper Contour & Glow Stick – Cream contour & highlighter duo. They already had a similar product in the past, which wasn’t super impressive (especially compared to the discontinued powder version). Maybe this one is better. There are several shades.

CATRICE Iconail Gel Laquer Stargazing and Purple Rain – new shades. I always look for a nice “starry sky” shades and Stargazing has potential. Purple Rain is a plum.

CATRICE Endless Pearls Beautifying Primer – a radiant primer. Catrice doesn’t have swatches, but I think it’s subtle, or at least less glowy that the Soft Glam Filter.

CATRICE Tinted Lip Oil – There’s several colours available, I saw them swatched and at least three have that (to me) annoying pH changing tint. Since I’m still interested in the formula I might get one of the lighter shades. Though their previous lip oil version wasn’t nearly as nice as Essence’s Cranberry oil.

ESSENCE Hydra Kiss Lip Oil – another lip oil. It’s would be great if the formula were the same as in their Cranberry version.

ESSENCE love is in the air blushlighter – a glowy blush. Essence has no swatches and I’m not sure this will be sold here, as it’s not on Slovene website, but I hope we get it.

MAX FACTOR Facefinity Universal Primer – I saw this is new on DMs website. It’s described as a mattifying, pore minimizing primer, so it’s likely best for oily skin.

19 recent beauty empties- which ones will I restock immediately?

Time for my beauty empties! Which ones did I love and which ones not?

Here are my hair care empties:

    1. Guhl Peach Shampoo- my friend sent this to me from Germany. I love the smell, it lathers nicely and makes my hair feel clean and fresh.

    2. Better not Younger Wake Up Call Volumizing Conditioner // Amazon // Ulta

I was not in love with this conditioner. It smells strange chemically and it is not conditioning as much as I like. I feel like my hair is not detangling as fast as it should. Especially for the price I think it is not worth it.

    3. Better not Younger Hair Redemption Restorative Butter Masque // Amazon // Ulta

This hair mask is absolutely amazing. It contains a blend of Mango, Macadamia, Cupuaçu, Murumuru and Avocado nut butters-oils. I have purchased this multiple times already. This gets my tangly hair super soft and manageable. The scent is pleasant as well. My hair looks shiny and healthy. Love it! Totally worth it.

    4. Loreal Preference Luminous Fade-Defying Color 9.5A // Amazon

    My body care empties:

    1. Nivea Essentially Enriched Deep Nourishing Serum with Almond Oil // Amazon

A deep moisturizing body lotion with the pleasant Nivea scent. A staple in my house! Love it and will always repurchase!

    2. Coppertone SPORT Sunscreen SPF 30 // Amazon

This sunscreen is easy to apply, does not leave a white cast. I think it is good but it smells a bit artificial like plastic or something lol. Free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, PABA, phthalates, & dyes. I will repurchase.

    My skin care empties:

    1. Yes To Cucumbers Face Wipes // Amazon

I really liked these wipes. Strong enough to get rid of makeup and do not leave an oil residue (like the Neutrogena wipes do). I like to use them on my neck to get rid of foundation, so I don’t have to splash the water everywhere.

    2. Organic to Green Coco Oil Rose // Amazon

Very mild coconut oil cleanser. I love it. I like to use this to get rid of stubborn (or waterproof) mascara or other eye makeup.

    3. Derma E Hydrating Gentle Cleanser // Amazon

One of my favorite facial cleansers out there. Mild but strong enough to get rid of makeup. Smells fresh! Lathers nicely.

    4. Odacité Blue Aura Cleansing Water // Nordstrom

I used this like a toner after washing my face and loved it. Neem, holy basil and turmeric are infused in aloe vera juice paired with salicylic acid. It feels super balancing and soothing on my skin- plus it smells very nice in a natural way.

    5. Jouviance Exfoliant Gentle Purifying Scrub // Amazon

This scrub reminds me on the St. Ives Apricot scrub (without the apricot scent lol). I think it is too abrasive and can actually harm your skin. It is ironic that it says it is a “gentle scrub” because it think the particles are definitely too big and harsh. A “no” from me.

You know I sleep with these for so many years, right? If not, read this!
    7. DERMA-E Purifying 2-in-1 Charcoal Face Mask // Amazon

This is a great detoxifying face mask with charcoal! Great to get your skin squeaky clean.

    8. Medicube Deep Vita C serum // Amazon

This is a fantastic Vitamin C serum! It feels very silky. Product stays fresh because they pack it in 3 little ampoules.

    Miscellaneous empties:

    1. Gelous Advanced Nail Gel Coat

This product is discontinued and I am devastated! I have been using this top coat for probably 9 years and it was the best one out there. Thick AND glossy and it made my nails hard and strong. So sad!!! I am on the hunt for a replacement. Trying currently the INM Out the Door top coat. It is OK. But not as amazing as Gelous was.
    2. Makeup Revolution Conceal & Define Full Coverage Concealer // Ulta

This is a very decent affordable concealer. Can look a bit dry though on under-eyes of us mature ladies. Try to use an eye cream under, let it sink in for couple of minutes before you apply this. Great coverage.

My secret (that is not really a secret anymore) to cover my frown line. Basically what I use instead of Botox lol. I use this every single day and would not know what to do without it. This is how I apply Dermaflage! I buy this now in a 4 pack because it is cheaper. 1 tube lasts me about 2 month.
    4. Roen vowBROW Pencil // Amazon

This is a fantastic brow pencil. I loved especially the shade “Medium” because it was cool toned and looked very natural.

There you go. These were all my recent beauty empties!

Bourjois Healthy Mix – Mateja’s Beauty Blog

Bourjois Healthy Mix – Mateja’s Beauty Blog

    Healthy Mix Radiant Foundation (2023)

    50C and 56W

Healthy Mix is an old favourite of mine. It’s a foundation I could always rely on it looking good not matter the condition of my skin. My only complaint was the lightest shades weren’t a great match for me, as neither 50 nor 50.5 are as light as for example Maybelline’s Fit Me shades. They recently changed the packaging and the numbering system, and I thought that was it, but it turns out they updated the formula as well.

I’ve worn both the old version and the new one side by side and the new one thicker, it’s has a lot more shine, in fact it’s verging on greasy-looking (tested in the summer) and it doesn’t set. The old one had that perfect level of glow, so it’s a shame they felt the need to change that. I can deal with this change, since my skin is normal-dry and most foundations turn matte on me in time (this one is getting less shiny on my skin since it’s already cooler outside), but those that considered this their winter foundation and have combination skin, may feel disappointed. I’ve certainly read enough complaints about the new formula on Bourjois’s website. It still looks good on the skin, perhaps for a while less natural as it’s very glowy in the summer, so it’s more like you’d apply a shiny moisturiser (when I tested them side by side in hot summer the difference in finish was very noticeable). It’s still one of those foundations that doesn’t look like heavy makeup and blends into the skin seamlessly.

Before/after of the old formula from a review. New has the same level of coverage:

It still has the same fruity scent and staying power is the same, which was never impressive without some help from other makeup (primer and/or powder and/or setting spray).

I see there is a new shade 49.5N, which might be the light shade I was waiting for. 50.5 still exists with the added N, I’m guessing for neutral. Sadly I don’t have the old shade 50 to compare it with the new 50C. I got another deep shade 56W, which probably corresponds to the 56 shade in the old packaging.

    Healthy Mix Hydrating Primer

This makes many claims from blurring imperfections to nourishing, hydrating, illuminating, prolonging the staying power of makeup and acting as skin care with an antioxidant complex of vitamins C, E and B5. It’s also vegan and has 88% of ingredients of natural origin. It’s a type of an illuminating primer and originally I thought it’s just a bland basic hydrating formula, but a lot more interesting.

Formula is a thin, liquid formula in a sort of a light grey shade – it’s completely clear on the skin. There no big visible shimmer in it, yet it leaves a lovely glow on the skin. Even after the primer becomes dry to the touch, the skin has that shine. I have no idea how they managed that or I’m just not seeing the shimmer because it’s so fine. It start of slightly sticky, but then sets to a dry-to-the touch finish. Currently I’m sporting shiny SPFs, so I don’t need such a primer in my routine, but it may be very handy in colder months to add some life to matte-looking dry skin. There’s no blurring at this formula and I don’t find it particularly smoothing, so it just adds a glow while leaving the texture and skin tone like it is.

Left with primer and right without.

It contains a small amount of panthenol (B5), vitamin E, vitamin C (Ascorbyl Glucoside), a weak version of vitamin A (Retinyl Palmitate), hyaluronic acid and some extracts. It has a typical Healthy Mix fruity scent.

Aqua/Water/Eau, Cyclopentasiloxane, Propylene Glycol, Dimethicone, Polymethylsilsesquioxane, Vinyl Dimethicone/Methicone Silsesquioxane Crosspolymer, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Dimethicone/PEG-10/15 Crosspolymer, Magnesium Sulfate, Lauryl Peg-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Panthenol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Phenoxyethanol, Parfum/Fragrance, Caprylyl Glycol, Talc, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Lecithin, Punica Granatum Fruit Juice, Vitis Vinifera (Grape) Juice, Retinyl Palmitate, Ethylhexyl Palmitate, Glycerin, Sorbic Acid, Dipropylene Glycol, Tocopherol, Silica Dimethyl Silylate, BHT, Triethoxycaprylylsilane, Butylene Glycol, Sapphire Powder, Palmaria Palmata Extract, Sodium Hyaluronate, Hexylene Glycol, [May contain +/-: Titanium Dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499)]

    Healthy Mix Anti-fatigue Concealer

    52

This concealer has been around for a while, but I never tried, so I’m not sure if they changed this formula too. I was a big fan of the 123 Perfect CC Eye Cream and Radiance Reveal concealers, but the discontinued them. Sadly, I couldn’t test Healthy Mix one properly because shade 52 is too dark for me.
I can’t really say what the coverage is because of the depth of the shade, but maybe about medium, I don’t think it’s full coverage. It is an thick concealer for a Bourjois formula and it thicker than the foundation. Blending takes a bit longer, but it still melts into the skin on the edges. Finish is glowy and this is a moisturising formula suitable for dry skin. It doesn’t feel as nice as Radiance Reveal, as it’s thicker, but it’s comparable to popular matte concealers. It’s kind of like Milani’s Conceal + Perfect concealer, except it’s glowy and moisturising instead of matte. I saw the lightest shade is 51 and I have a feeling it’s also too dark for me – in any case I find the formula thick for my liking.

    Healthy Mix Naturally Radiant Powder

    04 Golden Beige

This powder is more described as a powder foundation as it mentions medium coverage. It claims it has a luminous matte finish and anti-fatigue blurring capabilities. I always wanted to try this, since I saw someone praising it in her empties, but sadly this is again in a shade much too dark for me, it’s basically a bronzer. It makes me look so unevenly tanned, so I can’t wear this. It does have a sort of a luminous matte finish, as it takes away a lot of the shine from SPFs and foundations (I don’t have oily skin) and there is still some glow left.  In a thin coat it doesn’t take away much of the shine from the very shiny Healthy Mix foundation and concealer combination, so yes, it leaves the skin naturally radiant. Applied with a sponge, it takes most of the shine off and doesn’t look flat, but it did make my foundation look flaky when looked up close on my chin. Based on how tanned it makes me look and swatching, it looks like it has some coverage, but again I can’t really test these dark shades properly.

Like Physicians Formula packaging, this one has a bottom compartment with a sponge and a mirror.

Healthy Mix Lengthen & Lift Mascara

I never expected Bourjois would expand the Healthy Mix line into mascaras. I said in my first impression that I feel this mascara needs some time to become thicker and better, as when freshly applied the formula was awfully thin and it only managed to add some length. I was right and it became considerably better in two weeks. Formula thickened and now it’s a wonderfully volumising formula, comparable to Pupa’s and it’s easier to fan out the lashes as well.

Even though it adds a great amount of volume and looks good before my lashes drop, I just don’t like it because it’s a greasy formula and my glasses are constantly smudgy when I wear it – this problem (likely) won’t affect you, so ignore it, but I just can’t deal with this formula. Lashes stay reasonably soft with several coats of mascara.

    Healthy Mix Nail Polish

    125 Very-generose and 300 Greant’Ddictive

These two have such different formulas for the same line.

The light pink 125 is a thick, but sheer shade with first coat and opaque with a third. It’s a beautiful shade that reminds me of a better Essie Fiji. It lasted a normal amount on my nails, comparable to other brands (everything lasts over a weeks on me).

300 is opaque in one coat, a lovely gel-like smooth formula. Shade is a marsala brown-rosy red

    Have a great day!

*PR products – obviously, otherwise I’d have matching shades. I hope reviews are still helpful.

  • Deborah Milano – New Products 2023

Deborah Milano – New Products 2023

Deborah Milano – New Products 2023

    Skin Booster Serum Foundation

    3 Medium

A foundation that claims to have skin care benefits, combining a serum and coverage. This one has a bit of vitamin C in a  3-o-ethyl ascorbic acid form, which is by now nothing special and it can’t compare to some foundations or BB/CC creams that have a ton of skin care ingredients – but it doesn’t matter, what’s important is how it looks on the skin. This one claims to have a “second skin effect”, a lightweight formula, an illuminating effect and SPF 15. I got sent a shade much too dark for me, so I wore this for a short while before I took it off and there was no full day test.

Texture: Formula isn’t super liquid as you might expect from the packaging, but it is regardless lightweight on the skin and it blends easily. It’s similar to Catrice’s Nude Drop Tinted Serum, so it has quite a lot of pigment in a light formula. It becomes dry to the touch quickly on my skin, doesn’t slip into lines nor crease under the eyes or emphasize pores.
Coverage and finish: Finish is slightly glowy without looking or feeling greasy. Unlike Maybelline Superstay Serum it doesn’t have shimmer in the formula, but the glowy effect is similar. Coverage is hard for me to asses, since 3 Medium is so much darker than my skin tone. Maybe light-medium, as my freckles are visible.

Scent: Foundation has a strong floral scent.

Shade: There are a only 5 shades, 4 are sold here. 3 Medium is something like Revlon’s 300 shades in terms of depth, undertone looks cool. I tested shade 1 Light in the shop and it’s not for very pale skins, so there is no match for me in this range.

Packaging: Glass bottle with a pipette. The formula is too thick for such a packaging, so the pipette has a hard time picking up product.

If you’re one of those lucky ones who can find a match in this very limited shade range, it’s a foundation worth a try, as I think it’s better than Catrice’s Nude Drop and Maybelline’s Superstay Serum.

    Like A Pro Mascara

A mascara with a silicone wand and a spiral design. It’s one of those that quickly deposit a lot of product even when freshly opened and it’s quite a wet formula. I need to comb my lashes with a separate clean wand so the lashes look more neat, but I expect that it will become better at fanning out the lashes as the formula thickens and dries. It reminds me of Milani Highly Rated Anti-Gravity Mascara, as they have a similar brush, both add a lot of volume and length when freshly opened. Since it’s so wet it not suitable for my type of lashes, but if you don’t have a problem with lashes holding a curl, this is a quick volumising formula.

Deborah changed the packaging of their matte blushes. Their old ones had black, egg-shaped shaped pans for ages, but I never checked the shades, so I don’t know if they are new as well. There are 4 colours. This I think is the peachiest or most orange-apricot, though I think all colours are warm.

Pigmentation is ok, I need two (light) layers and wish blending were just a little smoother – not that it’s bad, but their baked blushes are better. Finish is matte, so I feel this looks a bit flat on my skin, but again I’m comparing this to the really good Hi-Tech formula which is baked blushes with tiny shimmer that add dimension. Shade Coral Pink is for those that love peachy shades, while on me I feel it ends up leaning too much to orange. I liked the look of shade 01, however, since I prefer the lovely formula of Hi-Tech, I’m no longer than drawn to add it to my collection.

Staying power is where it truly shines. I applied this at around 11 AM and it was still looking nicely fresh at 10 PM. The foundation I wore was nothing special, a cheap Eveline one.

Packaging is thinner than at Hi-Tech and it doesn’t have an added brush (the one at baked blushes is useless anyway).

    Red Touch Lipstick

    Nude Bouquet 01

I always like to try matte liquid lipsticks and I didn’t miss this one in the shops thought they’ve been out for a while, but I’m not fond of the shade range sold here. Even this lightest shade turns quite dark on me, but I saw there is an expanded range available (maybe just in Italy?) and there are a couple of shades that are more me. I own their other matte liquid formula, Fluid Velvet Mat Lipstick, which I think is still sold.

Formula is very lightweight and fully opaque with one swipe. The applicator is heart shaped so it’s good enough for a precise application, though for perfect edges you may still need a lipliner. It sets matte quickly and without feeling tight, so it’s quite comfortable for a matte liquid lipstick and feels better than their Velvet Fluid in that respect. However, as good as it looks freshly applied, it’s not the most long lasting. I expect great staying power from liquid matte lipsticks, as a lot I tried can last all day, but this wears off in a patchy way and it’s gone quite fast for such a formula. It still lasts a long time compared to classic lipsticks, but it’s not as resilient as I’d like.

Nude Bouquet looks lighter when freshly swatched than how it oxidises on the lips. It ends up a medium beige-brown on me, quite dark. On the swatch on my arm it’s fully oxidised.

    Gel Effect Nail Enamel

20 Soft Pink and 130 Chic Violet

I think these were just repackaged, as I had several shades in the previous bottles and these feel about the same. However, these two have quite different formulas. 20 Soft Pink is almost clear with one coat, second also doesn’t get you full opacity and at third the tips are still visible. It’s not my favourite nail polish when it comes to application, the formula is thick and I need three layers, so it ends up a bit too much for my liking. But it’s a good neutral shade.

130 Chic Violet is a medium violet with a smooth formula that needs almost just one coat (tips are minimally visible), but I always apply two. Staying power of both is good on me, but most nail polishes last well on my nails.

  • ORIFLAME Giordani Gold Pure Uforia Foundation

ORIFLAME Giordani Gold Pure Uforia Foundation

I’ve always been impressed by Oriflame’s foundations. Unfortunately I’ve only been sent one that fits my skin tone, while the rest were too dark, but at least I got to use them on others and they never failed to look great, no matter the skin type. I always planned to get matching shades for myself, but instead of formulas I know, I was tempted to get this one. Oriflame says it’s a medium coverage foundation with a luminous glow and a hydrating formula. It has an SPF 35+. Currently, I’m really enjoying this one and it’s one of rare shades that matches pretty much perfectly.

Texture: It’s a classic liquid foundation, creamy enough that it doesn’t run when pumped out of the bottle. It blends so nicely into the skin, leaving it natural-looking. It’s similar to how Bourjois Healthy Mix looks, so like there’s no foundation on.

Coverage and finish: Coverage is light to medium at most. I need another layer under the eyes, but applying more on spots still isn’t enough. So this is a formula for those that don’t mind the coverage isn’t perfect. Finish is glowy-dewy in the summer, while now it’s already less shiny, but it’s still very healthy looking. It’s definitely a foundation most suited for dry skin.

Staying power: Most foundations last ok on me, or at least I don’t pay much attention to where it fades as my skin isn’t that uneven, but this is a light coverage, hydrating glowy foundation which never last as long as matte ones.

Shade: Lightest shade Porcelain is one of the best matching shades I’ve found, so I appreciate this foundation even more because of that. It’s about the same depth as Revlon’s 110 Ivory and undertone is cool-neutral.

On this picture MasterCreation is very old and has turned darker. Originally it was about the same shade as Porcelain.

    Scent: It has no scent.

Packaging: This comes in a premium-looking bottle with a gold cap. The latter is of course plastic. Pump is precise at dispensing.

Price and availability: I think this was about 14 € on Notino. Regular price is quite steep in Oriflame’s catalogue, but it’s often on offer.

This is for those that have dry skin and like foundations like Bourjois Healthy Mix. Coverage isn’t amazing, which might put some people off, but I prefer a natural, no-foundation look, which this delivers. Added SPF is a bonus. I love that the shade matches me so well and that it looks so natural on the skin.

  • Quitting birth control in your 40s- my experience!

Quitting birth control in your 40s- my experience!

Here is what happened to me, when I quit birth control in my 40s. I did not find many experiences online from older women, so I thought I’d share with you mine! I quit birth control almost a year ago and I am 46 years old (turning very soon 47). I actually did not plan to stop taking the pill at all, but there were some issues getting my hands on my usual birth control. First there were out of stock and then the shipping took so long (long story but I was getting my birth control for years from Europe). I was kind of forced into quitting, because I could simply not get my hands on it. When the shipment finally arrived, I had already made my mind up: I would quit birth control now.

It is actually funny how the universe did this, because I think this is for my own good. I never thought of quitting with my birth control, because I am on it since I am 16 with a short break before I got pregnant, during pregnancy and for the time I was breastfeeding. So, even if you only take the time after my son was born, I was on birth control for around 17 years and before my pregnancy for probably another 10 years- for a total of 27 years of my life! Wow!

I always thought that I was doing good being on the pill and had no side effects. I remember how (20 years ago) my gynecologist would recommend to stay on the pill, even if in menopause, to reduce the symptoms of menopause. And that was my original plan- to just keep taking it! However, research has clearly evolved and I found in my research many articles and many gynecologists that today strongly advise against taking birth control when you are in your 40s.

A study of more than 100,000 women suggests that the increased breast cancer risk associated with birth control pills is highest among older women. The study found that the risk of breast cancer was greatest among women aged 45 and over who were still using the pill.  I had honestly no clue!

My stance was clear: now that I already did not take the birth control for a couple of weeks, I would certainly not start again. And what happened?

It was a really interesting journey! After only a couple of days without my birth control, I started to get some annoying night sweats. I also had often a headache and felt super moody. My mood was a constant roller coaster. After 2 weeks I experienced some unusual discharge and after 3 weeks my breasts started hurting and got really tender and firm, my nipples were so sensitive and painful! After 4 weeks I lost 2 pounds without changing my diet. Honestly, that phase was so interesting to experience, so many changes and here I thought: “That tiny pill is not doing much to my body.”

So many changes in such a short amount of time. Crazy that I put this little time-ticking bomb every day of my last 17 years inside of me! Because of the night sweats I thought, I might be already pre-menopausal, or maybe even in my menopause already? However, after 5 weeks I got my period. Now I am getting my period again very regularly, always around 26-28 days and then it will last 3-4 days. It can get pretty hefty sometimes, a lot of blood and sometimes also a bit of cramping involved, but doable. I feel a little like I am in puberty, like when I was getting my period for the first time, because I am not used it being so strong (on the pill I would sometimes just keep taking it to override getting my period at all). I also had to fight for a couple of weeks with some acne like a teenager.

For a couple of month I was literally cycling so strong! The word “cycle” made so much sense as I could feel the change of each phase so much! Every week was different and I could tell, in which phase I was. I would literally feel (and see!) when I was ovulating. My breasts would cycle too! They would be a couple days super firm and sensitive to the touch and then get soft again without being sensitive. And I also felt more “desire” shortly before I was ovulating! So crazy to see because for all those years the birth control literally controlled my body and I was not cycling.

    Quick timestamps of what happened:

After a couple days: Night sweats, headache, mood swings

After 2 weeks: a lot of discharge

After 3 weeks: tender breasts & very sensitive nipples

    After 4 weeks: I lost 2 pounds

After 5 weeks: I got my period, I started to “cycle” really strong

After 1 year: I lost about 6.5 pounds

I am off the pill now for almost a year (I quit in July 2022) and the cycles are not that strong anymore. I also no longer have night sweats and I am better balanced. No more mood swings and my breast are not cycling that much anymore either and are not getting that sensitive anymore. I feel all in all very balanced. I also lost a little bit of weight (around 6 pounds) without changing my diet which is always a plus in my book! I do not look back and will certainly not take birth control again.

P.S. Don’t forget to still protect yourself with a different method, preferably something without chemicals? 😜

Did you also quit birth control in your 40s? Share your experience below if you like! I would love to hear about them.

New in #133 New Catrice Products Autumn 2023

    Soft Glam Filter Fluid

    020 Light-Medium

The softly tinted, illuminating CATRICE Soft Glam Filter Fluid gives your face a “soft glam filter” effect for a soft-focus, perfected and radiant complexion. And it’s a true all-rounder: The fluid can be applied on its own, as a primer under or over make-up, or to set targeted highlights. The formula with vitamin E and squalane also nourishes and hydrates the skin.

Catrice sells this as a 3-in-1 product. It can be worn (1) on its own and they mention subtle coverage or (2) as a primer or (3) as a liquid highlighter (it can be found among foundations, primers and highlighters on their website). It is available in several shades. So far I’ve only seen two in drugstores here, 010 and 020. The lightest shade on the website is 002. I got sent a shade that’s much too dark for me and thought this is a sheer product, when I apply it, my face looks kind of dirty/uneven, so just because of that, I find it hard to like. I went to check a lighter shade, which looks better, but I didn’t get because I already have a similar product from Charlotte Tilbury and I’m not going to buy a product just for a review, especially when it’s not as good as a primer and highlighter than the more expensive option I already own.

I compared it to Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Hollywood Filter, which isn’t my favourite product and I rarely use it, when I do it’s mostly as a highlighter. At Catrice the glow is quite a lot more subtle than at the super glowy Hollywood Filter and difference is especially visible when they are worn alone. Catrice’s version looks better when used that way, as Hollywood Filter is way too shiny and makes me look greasy, while Catrice’s glow doesn’t feel as over the top. In fact, I find that since my skin is dry, it looked more similar to a moderately shiny (tinted) moisturiser and not as a liquid highlighter/glowy primer. As far as coverage is concerned, I got a shade that’s too dark, so the depth of the shade provides some coverage, but I think just like Hollywood it doesn’t really cover anything.

Since it’s not as shiny, Soft Glam Filter is not the best as a liquid highlighter, as it’s weak (for my taste and I’m also dealing with an bronzer-like too dark shade). I might have a different opinion if I had a shade that matches me, who knows, but it’s not as glowy as CT.

Worn on its own. Camera picks up less compared to CT Hollywood.

I wore the Catrice and CT version side by side with a (matte) foundation on top to properly compare them. Foundation applies nicely over both and luckily the foundation covers the mismatched shade. Catrice’s glow is slightly less intense, but surprisingly although they look much different on their own, with a matte foundation on top, the level of glow is similar enough. But there are other differences at which you can see that drugstore doesn’t quite match high-end in this case. On the side with Catrice, the smile line looked deeper and foundation started slipping into pores. Hollywood side looked better, however, neither are massively impressive in my eyes, as Hollywood doesn’t hide/blur pores either, in fact without foundation and primer I can’t see them, but with makeup on top, creases appear and pores are on display.

So in short, yes it’s similar to Hollywood in terms of glow when used as a primer, but not as a liquid highlighter and it’s even less good at blurring/hiding pores are lines. I also feel that the side with Catrice looks more flat despite a similar glow level because the skin looks less fresh.

    Soft Glam Filter Powder

This skin-perfecting face powder offers a “soft glam filter” effect for a naturally radiant and soft-focus finish. With a balanced blend of shades, the CATRICE Soft Glam Filter Powder ensures a healthy look and is suitable for all skin tones.

I had high hopes for this after I saw a before after on Catrice’s instagram. Of course I didn’t get the same result. In theory it should be great – a mix of peachy, green and violet tones that colour correct the skin tone, so all very reminiscent of the Guerlain Meteorites. It also swatches beautifully, subtly glowly, but not shimmery. However, on the face it’s looks flat. It’s more matte than what the swatch promises and the foundation just doesn’t look as nice with it.

It says the shade is universal, but it swatches white and I think it leaves a cast, so it may just be for pale skin tones only. It makes the pores less visible on the pictures due to a mattifying effect, but in person they don’t look minimised. On my chin it makes the foundation look textured. For a slightly blurring and glowy powder, Physician’s Formula All Day Rose is still my first choice.

It has a strange scent that might bother some. I find it’s not too strong for me.

    Melted Sun Cream Bronzer

    020 Beach Babe

The CATRICE Melted Sun Cream Bronzer gives the complexion a sunkissed look. It is easy to apply and blend. The soft, creamy texture with buildable coverage practically melts into the skin, creating a matte and smooth finish.

A creamy bronzer that gives me “Chanel Bronze Universel vibes” (not that I had it). Its pigmented creamy formula is more on the silicone-dry side. Finish is nice, natural and the bronzer looks like “it melted into the skin”. Pigmentation is opaque when swatched, but it sheers out on the skin, which is a good thing, as such things should be applied gradually. It blends beautifully with a brush, but with fingers it needs some effort since it’s a thin formula with not much slip.

Shade is leaning to orange on me, so I’m not loving it as much as their bronzer from the Holiday Skin Bronze & Glow Palette. It swatches much cooler than it ends up on my cheeks.

To sum up – great formula, not the best shade for me.

Curl it Volume & Curl Mascara

The CATRICE CURL IT Volume & Curl Mascara ensures ultra-volume and gives each individual lash a perfect curl! The specially curved silicone brush precisely separates the lashes. Thanks to the clump-free curl formula, the mascara keeps the lashes curled – for next level lashes for up to 24 hours!

A nice mascara even when it’s freshly opened. It defines well, fans out the lashes and adds length. It’s not a massively volumising mascara, but good enough and it a type of mascara that looks more natural than mega volumising formulas. It claims it curls the lashes – as someone with lashes that are hard to curl I can say it does nothing special, but that’s hardly surprisingly since it’s a regular formula. It doesn’t smudge, crumble nor irritate my eyes. Lashes are still soft after several coats.

    Glossin’ Glow Tinted Lip Oil

010 Keep it Juicy and 030 Glow for the Show

The gamechanger in lip care: The CATRICE Glossin’ Glow Tinted Lip Oil combines the high-gloss finish of a lip gloss with the intensive nourishing properties of a lip balm. The texture reacts to the natural pH value of the lips – for a unique, soft pink finish. The formula with cherry and pomegranate oil provides an ultimate nourishing boost.

Now we came to the stand outs in this update. These are just lovely. Very thick and rich, not sticky, they feel nourishing on the lips, they stick on for a long time, have a great level of gloss shine and feel like an oily gloss. Well done, it’s even better than Essence’s Cranberry Oil. These are super glossy on the lips and the shine lasts better than at many glosses.

There are five shades and based on Catrice’s swatches three of the shades are those pH reacting one and those include the pink 010 Keep it Juicy, which starts of clear and then turns pink. Once it wears off, the lips stay pink. Shade 030 Glow For The Show is orange and it looks a bit orange on the lips – not the best look IMHO. They have a sweet, candy scent.

Max it Up Lip Booster Extreme

010 Spice Girl and 030 Ice Ice Baby

The Max It Up Lip Booster Extreme by CATRICE is your partner in crime for voluminous-looking lips with a unique high-gloss finish. The soft applicator tip makes it easy to apply the lip gloss evenly and the shiny result with a hint of colour ensures full lips with a WOW effect!

These are just repackaged. Before the packaging was a square opaque metalic-looking tube – personally I think the new ones are a bit of a downgrade. I think I had both versions before, I certainly had the Icy Pumper (previously called 030 N’Ice Bonbon). The latter has a cooling effect and a blue-white shimmer that makes the lips look paler and apparently optically makes the teeth whiter (not that I noticed that).

The Spicy Plumper is a clear gloss with a tingly effect. Both don’t have anywhere near the level of shine of Lip Oils and don’t last as long either.

    Sheer Beauties Nail Polish

010 Milky not Guilty and 040 Fluffy Cotton Candy

The perfecting CATRICE Sheer Beauties Nail Polish in delicate nude shades acts like a filter for the nails. The nails are visibly brightened with a bluish shimmer and the finish is sheer so that the colour of the natural nail still shines through a little.

Two shades for what I call an elegant nude manicure. Both aren’t opaque not even with three coats, so they look like popular Essie shades like Madeimoselle and Ballet Slippers. Formula is very sheer with one coat, but all coats apply evenly. Both 010 Milky not Guilty and 040 Fluffy Cotton Candy end up similar on the nails.

Dream in Soft Glaze Nail Polish

    010 Hailey Baby

Create trendy nail looks in no time with the pearlescent CATRICE Dream In Soft Glaze Nail Polish. Thanks to the long-lasting formula with a “soft glazed” effect, the nails are perfectly styled and ready for the day!

A nail polish for that glazed donut manicure that was popular for five seconds. It’s a frosty white shade and it’s has more coverage with one coat that the two Sheer Beauties shades, but it works as a topper. It’s closer to opaque with three coats than Sheer Beauties and looks similarly elegant on the nails. Formula is smooth at all coats.

    Dream in Jelly Sparkle

    030 Sweet Jellousy

Create trendy nail looks in no time with the translucent CATRICE Dream In Jelly Sparkle Nail Polish with large glitter flakes. Thanks to the long-lasting formula with a “jelly sparkle” effect, the nails are perfectly styled and ready for the day!

More of a topper shade, though it can be build up to an more opaque look. On my nail it’s three coats. It has a sheer reddish pink jelly base and gold flecks that don’t come to focus as much as you can see in the bottle when you build up the shade. Since it’s a glitter nail polish it’s more difficult to remove.
