11. Poodle perms

ABBA are as ‘70s as it gets and Anni-Frid rocked one of the decade’s favourite styles back in the day; the tightly curled perm, as seen here in 1974. And now it’s back! From TikTok to in-salon, people are experimenting with perms again; the traditional kind, as well as looser solutions, to get the wave pattern they’re dreaming of.

I have been struggling with this foundation since I got it months ago. My first impression was disappointment because I expected a lot given that I love their Fit Me Matte + Poreless and Dream Urban Cover foundations, so I was really looking forward to this launch. I’ve been trying this with different bases and in different conditions and we continue to have our ups and down – well, decent days and not so good days. It’s one of the new serum foundations, so those formulas that are meant to be very lightweight and contain skin care ingredients. This one has a small amount of Ascorbyl Glucoside, a stable version of vitamin C, but that’s about it. What’s unique about it is the tiny shimmer that you can see in the packaging, however, it doesn’t make the skin look sparkly in any light.

Texture: It’s a light liquid foundation formula, similar to their Fit Me Matte + Poreless, so quite thin. I’ve tried applying it with different methods and I prefer my usual dry sponge with it. This foundation has often made my skin look much more textured than it is without foundation. It can sink into pores, emphasizing them, as well as making the lines appear deeper. Something similar happens to me with most such serum foundations (most notably both Catrice such liquid formulas, HD Coverage and Skin Tint). Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte + Poreless is nicer as it manages to create a smoother look over pores. Superstay also doesn’t work well with thick coats of SPF, exception I found so far is Biore which has a velvet-primer like finish. Over SPFs I’ve experienced it becoming flaky at application, peeling in places.

Coverage and finish: Coverage is low. With one layer it’s more like a tinted moisturiser and just evens out the skin. I need an extra layer or a separate concealer under my eyes and the sides of my nose – most of my freckles are also visible. It can be built up easily. Finish is unique, as it sets matte on me (dry skin), but the formula contains extra fine shimmer, so the skin is matte, yet glowy from that highlighter in it. From far away it looks great, but from close up you can see the texture. 

Staying power: It lasts ok, which isn’t surprisingly for a matte foundation on a dry skin. Since the coverage isn’t amazing, it’s also hard to see when it disappears from the skin. It wears evenly on me.

Shade: The lightest shade we have in local drugstore is 03, which is similar to Fit Me Matte + Poreless 110 (a touch too dark for me). Naturally I assumed Shade 02 that I found online is lighter than 03, but it’s not a great match for me. The difference between my neck and face is visible at this foundation, not as much because of depth, but also because of the undertone which pulls to peachy-orange. At Maybelline their Dream Urban in 095 is a perfect match for me.  

Scent: It has no scent.

Packaging: This foundation has a big opening and no stopper, so the neck can become messy very quickly. I’ve tried a few such foundation with a pipette and this is the first at which is works.

Price and availability: I ordered online for about 10 €. In local drugstores it’s 16 €.

I like the matte dry-to-the-touch yet glowy finish it has, but it makes my skin look textured. I’ve been trying to make it work, but so far this is not as good as Matte + Poreless.

Although it sounds like it shouldn’t work, mushroom-brown hair colour is just beautiful. In fact, it’s become one of our favourite shades for brunettes right now.

As super as the real food they’re named after, mushroom-brown hues can elevate your hair game in 2023, with rich, earthy goodness. That’s why Tina Mehmi , from our innovative Colour Workshop team, has shared nine amazing mushroom-brown hair looks to bring out the best in your brunette tresses.

1. Light mushroom-brown balayage

“Mushroom-blonde balayage is the way forward for spring and heading into summer,” explained Tina. “Mushroom-brown hair can look quite flat with certain complexions, so golden-blonde balayage is just the remedy to add lightness and make your eye colour pop.”

2. Base mushroom hue with caramel highlights

Why not break the rules with a cool mushroom-brown base and delish caramel brown highlights. Did somebody say sunkissed? You’ll feel it, even if you haven’t seen any rays since last year.

3. Earthy mushroom-brown waves

“A lighter mushroom look is nice if you’ve got a medium to dark skin tone, adding more interest and movement to your hair,” explained Tina. “But most importantly, this earthy shade can also bring out your tan.”

4. Two-toned mushroom-brown locks

Part of mushroom-brown’s appeal is that it comes in a wide range of light and dark hues; making two-tone styles a match made in heaven. Tina noted, “For this two-tone look, you can use a cooler reflect brown then add another lighter shade to create a lovely contrast”.

5. Muted bronde mushroom-brown

A shimmery bronde infusion is a gorge way to give dimension to brunette locks, luminating the mid-to-end sections of cool mushroom-brown.

6. Pretty mushroom-brown hair with light tones

“Mushroom-brown on pinky skin can look quite harsh,” said Tina. “Here we added some light, bright tones to ensure a finish that wouldn’t clash with our client’s complexion.” If you’ve got longer lengths, flowing curls paired with curtain bangs make this a mushroom ‘do worthy of the red carpet.

7. Cool mushroom-brown lob

“Here’s a true mushroom-brown hair colour with an extra drop of coolness in a lob style,” explained Tina. “Our client’s natural tresses have a lot of red in them, so to neutralise it, we used extra, cooler pigments.” Tina added that: “Indian and Asian hair tends to be quite warm naturally, so adding the cool colouring will create a perfect mushroom-brown shade.”

8. Mushroom-brown with a sunny money piece

We all know how well money pieces work with dark locks; they’re sophisticated, nostalgic and bring full attention to your features. If ‘90s trends are your jam, this is your new hairstyle.

9. Dark mushroom-brown balayage

We’ve already shown how a light mushroom-brown balayage brings spring-like lift. On the opposite end of the scale, a dark-brown mushroom balayage is super-sultry and indulgent, and coupled with long locks, is the true definition of swish-ability.

MIXA Baby Soothing Cleansing Oil Atopiance

My standard cleansing gel for the face that I use every day. It foams well, doesn’t irritate my eyes, it’s gentle, not drying nor scented and cleans well. The pump packaging is very handy. I’ve used up several so far. Otherwise, this is a head to toe type of product for babies and adults.

Repurchase: Done

HADALABO Gokujyun Oil Cleansing

Repurchase: Yes, but I have to order it online and Nuxe’s, which is just as good, is sold in local pharmacies.

SVR Sensifine Double Cleansing Balm

I liked this from the start, but by the end I just wanted it gone. It’s a balm that turns into an emulsion with water and it removes makeup, but it made my eyesight foggy and I just didn’t like it as much as lighter-feeling cleansing oil. It’s not bad and it’s made for sensitive skin, but it wasn’t my favourite.

Repurchase: No.

COSRX Galactomyces 95 Tone Balancing Essence

I’ve been using this for years every day and I credit it as the product that helped fix the texture of my skin. It’s a rich toner-like product with 95% ferments (galactomyces) and rest are niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, panthenol, allantoin, adenosine and a handful of fillers. It has no scent.

Repurchase: Yes.

AFRODITA COSMETICS Skin Specialist Vitamin C Anti-Age Serum

Repurchase: Maybe, but I’m currently giving Garnier’s Vitamin C Serum a go.

NEUTROGENA Bright Boost Illuminating Serum

A serum with Neoglucosamine or Acetyl Glucosamine, a super hydrator with a supposed anti-ageing effect and it should also fade hyperpigmentation. It’s more of lotion than a serum and it contains tiny shimmer. The latter creates an instant illuminating effect, but a weak one. I don’t know if it does anything this that is says, but my skin is in nice condition and I like using it.

Repurchase: Done.

BALEA Niacinamide Tages Crème

I like this mainly because it has 10% niacinamide and an SPF 30, so I can wear it daily, but it’s not a particularly comfortable cream. It’s not greasy, but it takes time to absorb and I can feel it on the skin. It’s a moisturiser for those that are not quickly annoyed by such things and I imagine those with oily skin may not enjoy it.

Repurchase: Done. The packaging is different now.

ORIFLAME Optimals Urban Guard 3D Night Cream

This was a nice basic moisturiser. It has glycerine 2nd on the ingredients list, shea butter 4th, niacinamide 6th and maybe less impressive some hyaluronic acid at the end plus spruce extract. It’s nothing ground-breaking, but a nice standard moisturising, nourishing, slightly brightening formula with no fragrance and a gel-cream medium thick texture that absorbed fast enough.

Repurchase: Maybe, but there are similar formulas I don’t have to order online.

SVR B3 Ampoule Hydra

A light toner-like serum with 5% of niacinamide and 3 kinds of hyaluronic acid, it’s designed for sensitive, dehydrated skin. It absorbs quickly and is nice for layering, but since I don’t have sensitive skin, it doesn’t really stand out that much among a ton of niacinamide serums, especially for the price.

Repurchase: No.

SKINFOOD Black Sugar Honey Mask Washoff

I don’t know if this exists anymore. Their Black Sugar mask is the only thing that can make my skin feel smooth, but I got this because I read it smells amazingly of honey. The scent was nice, but this is a completely different product than the original Sugar scrub-mask. There was much less scrub particles and the formula was honey-like, so it was like a nourishing wash off mask for dry skin. It left a coat of product when washed off and I think that sometimes broke me out.

Repurchase: No.

NIVEA Care Shower Apricot & Apricot Seed Oil

One of my favourite shower gel scents, as it smells just like apricots.

DOVE Deeply Nourishing Shower Gel

A shower gel I buy very often. It’s my favourite formula because it’s thick, creamy and nice for dry skin. Plus I’m a fan of the classic Dove scent.

SUBRINA Shower Gel Rose Garden and Good Vibes

Rose Garden has one of the best rose scents I’ve tried – it smells just like yellow roses planted in front of the house. Good Vibes has a unique scent. It starts with a note of pineapple, but later transform into a  sweet, fresh, clean almost powdery scent that is so familiar to me, but I can’t put my finger on it. The scent are intense, so they linger on the skin and in the room.

SCHWARZKOPF FA Explore Fiji Dream Shower Gel

One of my favourite shower gel scents. It’s very similar to the Bath & Body Works Champagne Honey Apple, a warm fruity scent.

AFRODITA COSMETICS Lavender Relaxing Moments Oil Shower Gel

A basic shower gel with a great lavender scent. I repurchase this one often.

Repurchase: Yes

FELCE AZZURA Sublime Argan Shower

A thin shower gel with a very intense, warm, spicy indescribable oriental scent. It’s won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, but it’s nice to use in colder weather.

Repurchase: Maybe.

BALEA Duschől

This is merely ok. Once you try L’Occitane such thin oils that emulsify only a little don’t seem so great. It felt a lot less nourishing than L’Occitane, but it was still ok for dry skin. It cleanses well, even more stubborn dirt (grease), so it’s great for washing hands. It has a bland scent.

Repurchase: I probably should.

NIVEA Care Nourishing Cream

One of my favourite body moisturisers. It has a good, thick formula, it’s nourishing and has the typical Nivea scent. I trust Nivea most for the best lasting hydration effect.

Repurchase: Done.

BOROTALCO Original Deo Stick

A good stick anti-perspirant that worked like it should. The scent is a bit dated, but a standard powdery-clean creamy one. Like all stick deodorants it leaves white marks, but such versions are the most reliable to me.

Repurchase: Yes, but I switched to Nivea Pearl & Beauty because I used to buy it and they recently released the stick deo again.

Let’s start with skin care:

This is such a good facial cleanser! It lathers well and you only need one pump to cleanse your face. It is very gentle, but still strong enough to remove even makeup and mascara. Smells a bit like green tea to me. This bottle lasted me probably 6 month! A winner!

I ALWAYS include a Vitamin C serum in my morning skin care routine and this one is a great one. I have used up multiple bottles already. Vitamin C gets rid of any brown spots on your skin!

A very nice moisturizer with copper peptides- which are so amazing for your collagen production! Feels not heavy but is very moisturizing. It smells very strong like lavender- which I do not mind.

MY ABSOLUTE FAVORIT SCRUB IN THE WORLD! I will always have this in my bathroom cabinet!

I love this stuff! Smells good, makes my hair feel soft and healthy and the price is good too!

Here are my body care empties:

I enjoyed this. A fresh scent and it feels hydrating and works also great as a shaving gel.

I am surprised to see this is available on Amazon! Usually my good friend from Germany sends me this. If you love ginger, then you must try it. It smells so invigorating! Wakes you up in an instant. LOVE! 💚

A very lightweight body lotion with a hint of Vanilla-  not overpowering. Really lovely!

So glad they came out with this new version. Same amazing Pina colada scent, not greasy but without the glitter of the original! My fave!

This is a good sunscreen, however, the scent is so chemical! Smells literally like plastic. 

This is a fantastic foot cream! Super moisturizing but without feeling heavy or greasy. Has a nice peppermint scent. Lovely!

Here are more miscellaneous empties:

One of my favorite foundations! Looks so natural. Feels very light on my skin and almost undetectable. Neither matte, nor shiny. The perfect middle of radiance. Great for mature skin!

Unfortunately I did not like this mascara. The wand is way too big for my small eyes and it smudged everywhere. I did not think that my lashes looked good with this either. I can only imagine this working for women with big eyes!

My favorite nail polish color (pastel blue)! I have already repurchased. 

After my favorite top coat was discontinued, I was on the hunt for a new fave. However, this one ain’t it! The brush is so small and the coat is too thin. 

I like how smooth this goes on- but the color “dark blonde” is still too warm for my taste. I have another one to use up but I am on the hunt for a cooler more ashy eyebrow pencil.

Skin tone vs. undertone

Most people can generally tell whether they’ve got a fair, medium or dark skin tone, but when it comes to finding the hair colours that are the most flattering for you, it can get complicated. There’s tone – the surface colour of the skin – and then there’s undertone.

Undertone is the subtle hue beneath the surface of your skin and this is the key to finding out your ideal colour palette (FYI, it also includes makeup, clothing and jewellery).

Whilst the surface colour of our skin can change, skin undertone never changes, even with a tan! So, it’s a much better way to determine which shades really suit your mane.

How to determine your skin undertone

There are three undertone colours: warm, cool, and neutral:
• If you’ve got warm undertones, your skin will appear peachy, yellow or golden
• Cool skin undertones have a blue, pink or red tinge
• Neutral skin undertones are usually balanced between blue and yellow, and are generally closer in appearance to the skin’s surface tone (neutral gals are lucky enough to suit a wide range of hues and shades)

It’s not always easy to decipher your skin undertone, so you’ll probably have to do a few things to work it out.

1 – Look at your veins

An easy way to determine your skin’s undertone is by checking the colour of the veins on the underside of your wrist (in natural light). If they appear blue or purple, it’s likely that you’ve got cool undertones, whilst greenish veins indicate a warm undertone.

If your veins aren’t that clear and seem to match the colour of your skin, then you’ve probably got a neutral undertone.

2 – Think about how your skin reacts to the sun

How does your skin fare after being in the sun? Do you easily burn, or do you tan? The answer can help you determine your skin’s undertone. But remember, you should always layer up the suncream, whether you burn or not!

If you turn pink or burn easily, it means you’ve got less melanin in your skin, which can point towards having a cool undertone. If you tan easily or rarely burn, you’re probably warm or neutral-toned.

3 – It’s all in the eyes

People with cool skin undertones tend to have blue, green, pale brown or grey eyes, and naturally blonde, brown or black hair with ash tones.

If you’ve got brown, amber or hazel eyes, and strawberry blonde, auburn, brown or black hair with red or gold tints, it’s likely that you’re warm-toned.
