Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen

Let’s explore the difference between a physical vs a chemical sunscreen so that you can pick the correct one for your skin.

Physical vs Chemical Sunscreen

UV rays can contribute to skin aging and pigmentation. Furthermore, they can also advance the effects of photoaging, characterized by wrinkles, fine lines, and leathery skin. By blocking UV rays, sunscreen helps in preventing these signs of aging. Physical (also known as mineral) sunscreens and chemical sunscreens are two types of products designed to protect the skin from harmful UV rays, but they function in different ways and have distinct characteristics.

Physical Sunscreen

How Does It Work?

A Physical Sunscreen works by deflecting UV rays away from the skin. It uses a mineral-based formula that sits on the surface of your skin and thereby protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Moreover, there is no need to wait before going into direct sunlight because physical sunscreens begin working immediately after application. Furthermore, if you are unsure whether a sunscreen is physical or not, you can look for ingredients such as Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide, or alternatively, look for terms like ‘physical’ or ‘mineral’.

Chemical Sunscreen

How Does It Work?

Unlike Physical Sunscreens, Chemical Sunscreens actually soak into the skin. It is recommended waiting 15-30 minutes before going into the sun, however, once absorbed, they will protect your skin against UVA and UVB rays by transforming them into heat. This type of sunscreen is popular because they feel lighter on the skin and tend to be more water and sweat-resistant. To determine whether a sunscreen is chemical, look for ingredients like oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate.

So Which One Should I Use?

At the end of the day, there is no right or wrong answer. It all comes down to which you personally prefer. If you are active or don’t like the feeling of product on your skin, then opt for a chemical sunscreen. Whereas, if you have sensitive skin or don’t like the idea of chemicals being absorbed into your skin, then opt for a physical sunscreen instead.
